Show GOOD DERRICK HAY STACKER illustration showing how one la is made and directions for its ita economical the derrick consists of two principal parts a revolving boom polo pole or crane which swings in a completa 0 circle and a framework for supporting tile the crane the crane part I 1 Is 9 made with an upright mast 25 feet long and ID 10 inches in diameter at the base the base has an iron band shrunk on oil tile the wood and a ill inch iron pivot pin 12 inches long driven into the end the mast supports a boom pole 33 feet long and 5 inches in diameter at the small or upper end this loom boom pole Is fastened to the top end ot of the mast at a place 11 feet from the butt end tile the top Is about 32 22 feet from the ground when in position the boom pole pete Is supported by a pair of long poles for the top and a pair of shorter poles at the bottom tor for braces the lower ends of these braces are bolted to tho the mast in its center as shown in the sketch A pulley Is attached to each end of the boom pole tho I 1 lie base of the supporting framework Is made of two poles about 8 inches in diameter and 18 feet long the under tinder side of each end rounded up like a sled runner the poles are ar e placed about 15 or 16 feet apart and joined together with a anch piece at each end and a heavy timber in tho the center the upright mast is pivoted to the center of the heavy timber forming the lower bearing the upper bearing Is about 11 feet higher made of a platform 4 feet square constructed of plank 2 or 3 inches hay derrick thick this plat platform forin Is supported by 4 posts about 5 inches in diameter the lase base of the posts bolted 0 or r too toe nailed to the sled runner pieces near each eacle end of the pieces and about 15 feet apart the tops of the posts support the upper platform of plank the center cente of the platform Is cut out to receive the revolving upright mast forming the upper bearing it Is better to protect ab the mast at this point by a thin steel plate plat e about inches says hoards Il dairyman also it Is better to have two plates at the bottom 0 of f the mast with holes for the tha pivot pin in the center of the plate to give the supporting framework a additional d dit ional strength and stiffness it is lost host to attach two long braces from the bottom of each of the tour four sides to the opposite upper corners A rope of pure manila or inch in size Is large enough three pulleys and 80 feet of rope are sufficient when using hay bay forks but if a sling Is used 11 feet of rope and 4 pulleys will be necessary |
