Show field stream by vernon W shields looking back over 1947 here is my observations on our hunting and fishing conditions FISHING was not too good nor was it too bad either because of heavy plantings tooele thoele county of some of the best small stream fishing in the state how ever I 1 believe that three fourths of the fish that went into the streams came out the good old provo river came through with fly ing colors for a stream that Is fish ed as much as it is it is almost miraculous how it holds holds 1 up there is plenty of the famous brown trout left in its waters but you youve ve got to know the provo river in or der to catch them lake fishing in the remote areas of the was exceptionally good strawberry reservoir did not quite hit its usual stride the seas on closed just as it was beginning to produce fish lake produced plenty of lim limit it catches during the early part of the season for big ger and better fishing in the state of utah the hand writing on the wall states that we must have more re stocking and conservation the state at the present time has twelve fish hatcheries we need twice that many here s a list of the fish plant ings in tooele thoele county dates and places clover creek 1 load may 29 vernon creek 1 load june 3 creek I 1 load june 8 clover creek 1 load july 14 vernon creek I 1 load june 2 clover reek I 1 load june 3 settlement canyon 1 load june 12 vernon creek 1 load july 12 settlement canyon 1 load july 16 mill pond I 1 load sept 2 settlement Set lement canyon 1 load sept 17 this makes a total of 17 fish planted in tooele thoele county in 1947 for the amount of water we have in this county that Is a lot of fish DEER hunting success was a matter of opinion and depended on where you hunted on the east heaston preserve it was exception ally good in the range the hunting was spotty in the rest of the state I 1 would say that the deer hunting was only fair the weather for the hunt was very much in favor of the deer the leaves were still on the trees which made hunting more difficult on the post season deer hunts the kill will be about 75 percent the weather deet dee were lower down and the weather was more in favor of the hunters I 1 dont do t see any further need for the killing of doe in this state for next season ELK hunters had their usual bad weather but in spite of this all but two of the permit holders on the heaston preserve bagged their elk considering the heavy snows elk hunting in the state was pretty good PHEASANTS were e generally not too plentiful although I 1 be lieve hunters in tooele thoele county had more success than any year previous tremonton Tre monton and garland utah offered some of the states best shooting hunting was cur tailed somewhat by the numerous posted areas on pheasants we need more law enforcement to pro hect our birds from constant poach ing DUCKS were plentiful and the hunting was almost like the good old days although the federal re strict sanctions ions were a nuisance duck hunting took light for the 1947 season the predictions of some authorities on ducks proved to be a big joke oke the b ads were plentiful and the dates fell about right for us to get in on the big flights moving south next year I 1 think we are entitled to a longer season but I 1 am of the opinion that our bag limit should not be raised to over five or six ducks a day this amount of ducks is enough for anybody GOOSE hunting was pretty good but the season closed too early for tooele thoele county other parts of the state report more honkers than usual and the hunt ing better than it had been for years they are again s starting to talk about raising the d duck uck stamp fee iralee to 2 or 3 dollars the idea Is t to 0 raise more money for fin financing ancin g stricter enforce ments of hunting regulations the present law auth orizes that not more than 10 per cent of the present 1 dollar fee be used for law enforcement senator willis robertson of virginia is ask ing all the state game departments if they believe hunters should pay a higher fee from where I 1 sit it looks to me like the tra tion Is trying to provide some soft jobs for a lot of political friend I 1 would say that the sportsmen of this country would go for the high er fee providing that the money went for more waterfowl conserva tion and development I 1 believe that more needs to be done in the way of bundling bu idling dikes and bird re fuges than for law enforcement we need law enforcement all right enough but it if we get too much of a fund raised for that purpose a lone there will be too many soft jobs dished out to political friends who don dont t know a duck from a moose I 1 mr roy garrard reports that the deer situation around lake point erda and lincoln is easing some what his continual driving back of I 1 the deer and the elk is bringing results the weather has also mod crated a little the past few days and the big game I 1 more content to remain back on some of the bare hillsides in skull valley the deer have been coming down and rais ing heck with the ranchers hay stacks roy also says that he has made exactly arrests during 1947 that s a very good record ven even though I 1 don t agree with him on n some that were made consid ring ering the size of the county he has to 0 o take care of he is doing a very good job |
