Show A stone arch in tile the southeastern portion of utah R 00 I 1 46 te 0 or t L 60 ell an I 1 4 V A WA VV ja 4 1 I IN y this is a view in the kion mon dike area near moab utah of a very fine arch in sandstone lo 10 bated a few miles northwest of the town the arch is not large but its beauty is in its symmetry and especially in the high tow er which is a landmark to be the local name used at moab for this freak of nature is the cream puff arch the trip to it must be made by pack tram train we left moab in the morning with the pack horses laden with a tent bed rolls cooking utensils eats and what we needed for a party of foul four for two days going leisurely we got there in the early after noon and had plenty of time to look around see compare study light conditions and get ready for the next day this view is taken looking east erly our camp was about a mile or so removed on the eastern side of the rock masses and we walked to this spot with camera and tn tri pod as I 1 was using at that time a big 57 5 x 7 view camera the landscape was bathed in strong sunshine gorgeously set out no clouds in the sky no til fil ter was used so the print is a bald headed sky so much con damned by photographers arch cut by blowing sand we had in the party a graduate of geology from the U of IL who gave us the correct information as to the formation of this arch caus ed wholly by wind blown sand in its cutting action he stepped back a few rods got a sample of sand and with a powerful read ng glass showed us that its edges were worn rounded a result of much seen for miles distant the arch is in a mass of rock in front of that series which contains the turret the turret is capped with white rock pre bisely like a huge cream puff on a chocolate orange pastry this tower is about to movement having its sharp worn away signifying that it had hadi been blown about much tons of such sand had been hurled by the wind at the red rock cutting the weakest portion through thus making the arch he pointed out that the cream puff top was of a different geologic period later of course by being on top of the mass of sub stratum of red sandstone and gave the technical ical name for each period we saw no game no evidences of life just bareness of course our camp was a dry camp depend ing on the little barrels of water on the pack animals and they the horses had to be taken each day to water and brought back on the second morning with the rising sun we had the most beau ticul coloring I 1 have ever seen in the soft subdued light the first shafts of the rising sun hit the tops of the rock and gradually worked down giving the softest most tantalizing pastels challena chal leng ing one to catch them that was in the days before natural color f im of course the graduate of geology and I 1 both tried to get what we could in black and white but the charm of the scene was in the elusive ever changing chanting color effect we lost it but th memory of it clings as one of tie richest sights in nature we prowled around the hills there studying each effe t for two days photographing as well as seeing and on the third day the packer came back with the nags and took us back to moab thor hughly well pleased with our out ing m moab oab A beauty spot so much good scenery exists near moab that it has been cm em braced in a national monument klond ke at that time was not in eluded I 1 do not know if it was later added or not we e searched carefully for other things th ings with special emphasis on find ng evidences of fossils there but were unsuccessful the area of dinosaur bones is miles away nor in this barren place with wat er so distant did we find any evi dence at all of pre historic indian life there were no camps houses nor even near though many were found in other places adjacent ada cent to moab the coloring of this arch is gorg bous A dark salmon colored sand stone red varying as such rocks do lighter and darker and then lit up with blazing sun with mons trous arous turret arising in the back ground to a towering height a group of nature s choice bits charmingly assembled it is no wonder tourists go tl ere to moab to visit the arches national mon ament well satisfied feet high A small amount of shrubbery is seen in the fore foreground grou nd div ing a green tint in contrast to an otherwise dominating sand red ahe the shadow of the arch is plainly shown in the photo closer to moab I 1 found pottery arrow heads knives and many articles of the ancient indians and in the rocks the small casts or granaries gra gran eries which are locally there called moki houses four months work in moab I 1 spent four month months san in and near moab and covered it thoroughly photographically the most out standing man there in line with my hobbies hobbles was doctor williams a retired p physician hys ician he was past eighty years young keen ic spry and a leader in the civic civi C clubs ever foremost to advance his area he had scoured the coun try for indian artifacts and had a fine collection which he kindly put to my disposal to take photos of so that upon leaving that area I 1 had a photo record of the widest scope one could ask for I 1 owed much to dr williams As my work was interesting to others I 1 addressed to kiwanis club lectured in the school and wrote for the moab time dent newspaper the four months was pleasantly spent with rich re wards to me one make a preach ment but I 1 can cant t resist speaking of the work of the editor the ki warns wanis club and town officials and the county commissioners to put moab in the public eye as a scenic attraction they left noth ng un done that could advance their town and its adjacent attractions with the result of course that they got the arches national monument innumerable write ups and following that the steady trickle of tourists who spend a con sid erable sum to come and see in that visitation they drop shekels some to garages some to hotels anywhere iny where and everywhere around town and moab was keenly after such a steady crop it is a repeat customer stores know that a single sale is not the ultimate in merchandising it is the repeat sale which they want the cus tomer who comes back year in m and year out so with the tourists they induce repeat sales for they tell of what pleases them they them selves come back and induce oth ers to come thus a steady stream visits the area each person leav ing coin in his wake delta and fillmore have one each a fine at traction the great stone face for delta and the craters for fox fill more my little preachment ends right here make the very best use of those attractions and reap the tourist harvest from them mr and mrs dick manning from farmington and their sons bob and D ck spent sunday in tooele thoele with their daughter mrs A D thomas and family bob is on a forty day leave from the navy on his first trip home after two years overseas mrs annie smith is visiting in tooele thoele at this time with
