Show thoele takes pride in beautiful homes and gardens al V V the ins iris garden of mrs eldon shields north ath as it ap feared during the month of may tooele thoele is a city of beautiful gar dens the homes reflect the care and pride of the owner with the beauty of a garden in bloom in the spring the air is filled with the fragrance of lilacs locust blossoms and honeysuckle and gardens are filled with lilacs snowballs bridal wreath tulips and ins iris in pro profusion fusio n one of the most beautiful sights in tooele thoele was the ins iris garden of mrs eldon shields beside her home horn e at N ath three hundred var fleties of ins iris were in full bloom bloo m and only color photography cou could 1 d do justice e to the mass of color blues yellows jellows bronze pinks and whites the ins iris garden is a hobby of mrs shields started about four years ago and she has taken plea sure in adding a row each year while visiting with mrs shields to see the garden she said that last year when they thinned out the plants they had a truckload of roots to give away to friends and neighbors to add to their gardens one beautiful variety was the william mohr and others of the mohr family mrs shields told that the william mohr is known as the poor man mans s orchid as a start may be purchased for 35 cents other varieties in the garden were two beautiful yellows hap py days and california gold mrs shields exhibited the california gold in the ins iris show in the city hall in may with seven flowers out on one stalk then there are the gudrun white sable dank daak velvet chinese maid pink coffe brown wabash white and purple and the great lakes a beautiful blue in another row are the newta japanese ins iris with p curly blooms the bloom period is a month long running from the first of may until june and during that month hundreds of visitors call all day long to see the garden visitors come from tooele thoele and surrounding towns salt lake city and many out of state callers mrs shields enjoys her garden buying and planting new and dif ferent kinds of ins iris and watching them bloom her plants have cost her from 15 cents on up to 2 50 for her most expensive variety she has ordered roots from utah some the garden mrs shields hobby for the past four years drew vis igors daily to admire the three hundred varieties in bloom from denver and iowa and many man from S overtone oregon and shy she is intending to cross some of her varieties and see if she can devel op some new blooms |
