Show Cross Country Finishes Fourth in 5A State Competition The cross-country team is improving and making a name for itself as a powerhouse in the highly high-ly competitive 5 A cross country. by Danica Baird Pleasant Grove High School's cross country team may be few in number, but the legacy they are leaving behind be-hind is anything but small. After earning second place at last year's 5A State Competition, high expectations expecta-tions were placed on this year's team. They did not fail to disappoint. On October 20, at Sugar-house Sugar-house Park in Salt Lake City, the cross country team faced off against American Fork, the ESPN nationally ranked number one team, and the very strong Davis team. The Vikings cross country team met the challenge head-on. The Vikings held their own claiming fourth place just 1 1 points short of the third place Bingham team, Davis took second, and American Amer-ican Fork claimed first. Junior Haven Shelton dropped 28 seconds off of his last year's State time earning earn-ing tenth place with a time of 15:58.8, only three tenths of a second behind Davis' senior Austin Neuner. Shelton set a new school record breaking Evan Argyle's time by two seconds. Teammate junior Brady Olson earned thirty-fifth with a time of 16:48, senior se-nior Mark Lyons placed forty-ninth with a time of 17:02, senior Kyle Teusher placed fifty-fourth with a time of 17:10, and senior Schyler Harmon placed fifty-fifth with a time of 17:12. Teusher also earned the prestigious Academic All-State for having a 4.0 GPA. On the girls side, senior se-nior Tabitha Borland earned fourteenth place with a time of 19:47, trailing American Fork's Lakyn Luxby by just three seconds. Senior Alicia Heninger claimed thirty-seventh thirty-seventh with a time of 20:30.7 and also earned Academic All-State for her 4.0 GPA. On November 20, for the second year in a row the cross-country team will compete at Nike Cross Country Nationals Southwest Meet at Toka Sticks Golf Course in Gilbert, Gil-bert, Arizona. This prestigious pres-tigious meet is a by invitation invi-tation only and includes teams from Utah, Arizona, and Colorado. |
