Show 8 Vvp.r--.;JIMPANOGQSTIMES;..- October 13,2010 Lone Peak Spikers Best PG Vikings in 5 Game Match When the Knights secured a 3-- 1 lead in the third game, Pleasant Grove looked doomed. A Jenkinson tip sparked a come-back, and the game turned into a seesaw fight. When an Anna Hubert ace gave Lone Peak a 14-1- 3 lead, the Knights looked certain of pulling ahead. A Knight hitting error permitted the Vikings to storm back in the game. Through Makell Hymas' serving, Dahl and Daniel deliv-ered kills that gave the Vikings to momentum to stay out in front for the rest of the game. Kills by Sydney and Whit-ney Johnson made the fourth game a seesaw fight for a little while. Once Pleasant Grove broke a 9D9 tie, the Vikings took firm control of the game. Dahl and Daniel's hitting frus-trated the Knights even though Lone Peak kept pulling within one point. A Lone Peak service error forced the fifth game. During it, Sydney John-son's hitting gave the Vikings a 4-- 3 lead. However, the com-bined hitting power of Hunts-man, Hubert and Whitney cracked Pleasant Grove into pieces like a jackhammer would a concrete square. The Vikings couldn't recover in time. II ? Y-by Dean Von Memmott In a fivedgame volleyball match played at Pleasant Grove High October 7, the Lone Peak Knights sunk the Vikings by scores of 25-1- 9, 25-1- 9, 21-2- 5, 23-2- 5, 15-- 7. The showdown marked the third time that the two schools had squared off against each other third fall. In the first match, played during the re-cent Rocky Mountain Clas-sic Championships, Pleasant Grove defeated the Knights in a semifinal action. The Knights eventually avenged that lost by acing the Vikings in a three game match at Lone Peak two weeks later. The first game of the Oc-tober 8 match opened with Knight Whitney Johnson regis-tering kill. Kim Dahl's hitting gave Pleasant Grove a brief-2-- 1 advantage. The Vikings couldn't contain the Knights' aggressiveness in Game 1. Marquelle Funk and Ashlan Rogers led fierce Knight at-tacks that made it impossible for Pleasant Grove to regain the advantage after a Sydney Johnson kill had given the Vi-kings 3D2 lead. Even though Le'o Fotu's hitting had put Pleasant Grove within 7D6 and 10D9, Rogers delivered kills that that enabled the Knights to stay narrowly ahead, despite Dahl's aggres-siveness at the net. For the second game, Lone Peak rolled ahead 6-- 2. Just as Pleasant Grove appeared to be destined to be routed, Gabby Jenkinson made a kill that sparked a Viking comeback. The Vikings repeatedly tied the game through the combined hitting of Dahl, Audrey Biggs and Delayne Daniel. Eventu-ally, strong serving by Funk permitted Lone Peak to pull away, even though the Vikings did get within 18-1- 7. Lone Peak won Game 2 on a Viking hitting error. Zack Christensen, senior quarterback, had the machine rolling, but an early fumble and an interception gave the ball away twice. Our passing worked great as senior wide receivers McKay Hartzell and Jason West did their thing, 32 yards and 27 yards respectively, scoring our two touchdowns. And don't overlook senior kicker Winston Sorhaitz, he hit both PATs for the game, and on the year has scored 19 of 19 attempts. (He is also three of six field goal attempts.) In Region 4, sometimes it just comes down to "who wants it more." Our next game on Wednesday evening will be our last home game. We will play Lone Peak High School starting at 7 p.m. They are the Region leaders with a 5-- 0 record for region and 7-- 1 overall record. It's supposed to be another beautiful evening in the mid 60s to start the game. by Kent Allen It is tough to know that the best part of a Homecoming event is not the football game, but the highlighted action of "Throwing the Switch," but ..." I've got to admit, the "G" has never looked better. The new lights could probably be seen from space! The Vikings played a tough fought ball game against the Brighton High School Bengals. The stats showed a very even struggle. Brighton had 129 yards rushing on 29 attempts with 8 of 15 passing for 136 yards for a total 265 yards. PG had 126 rushing yards on 34 attempts with 11 of 21 passes for 142 yards, totaling 268 yards of offense. The stats wars would lean barely to PG. But, the scoring wars go to Brighton based on two fourth quarter touchdowns which gave them a come from behind win here on a beautiful Fall evening under the lights. rY'Y:W ... .. 23 Cooper Caldwell struggles against two Bengal tacklers.
