Student Council started collecting donations for the 'G' at the beginning of the summer. They collected donations outside Macey's grocery store each Saturday, created a website, and even contacted local businesses to sponsor them. Pleasant Grove answered their call, and the Student Council was able to raise $5,500 by September 29 . On Monday October 4, Mr. David Beck, the Student Council Advisor, bought two 5,000-watt 5,000-watt generators. On Tuesday and Wednesday (October 4, 5) he bought approximately 1,000 feet of lights and many extensions cords to hook up the lights to the generator. During their football class on Tuesday, October 4, members of the football team hiked up 'G Mountain' with the two generators. On Thursday, October 7, (one day before the Homecoming Game), student council members Jeremy Jensen , Cassie Wood, Kristen Millet, and David Beck hiked the 'G' with backpacks containing the lights and extension chords. They also carried the gas to fuel the generator. They began hiking at eleven o'clock in the morning and finished placing the lights at three in the afternoon. On Friday, October 8, student council members hiked the 'G' with the remaining lights. At approximately 6:30 p.m., they ran a few test-runs and thankfully everything worked. They were finally ready to light the 'G.' . After the Homecoming Game, Jensen thanked the community and their sponsors for the generous support they , received. Using a cell phone to communicate with the members on 'G Mountain,' Jensen orchestrated a count-down with the high school marching band's thundering drum-roll. After much anticipation, the 'G' was lit and the crowd burst into roaring applause. Jensen said, "I'm just so' glad that it worked. All of that hard work actually paid off." The student council's dedication, hard work, and the involvement from the community ensured that the tradition of lighting the 'G' will continue. The 'G' will be also be lit for high school graduation and Strawberry Days. The "G" could be seen around the valley like it has never been seen before, after a brand new lighting system was installed on the "G". Photo courtesy of Timpanogos Times |
