Show Moah Has a Chess Club; First Meeting Held The attempt lo form a Moab Mo-ab chess club seems lo he oil lo a good start. Fit teen people showed up at Hie initial init-ial get together at Moab Lanes last Sunday, and three others expressed interest but were unable to attend the first meeting. Further, several sev-eral of those who did attend knew of others who wore good prospects for the new club. Of the eighteen, tliei'o were three women, a girl thirteen, and 3 high school holy. The rest were men, one of these a citizen of Holland on an extended tour of the United States and staying in Moab for n time. The chess playing play-ing skills of those present ranged widely, from beginners begin-ners who had never played before, to three or four with considerable experience, but all had one thine in common. the desire to play chess and lo improve their skill at this ancient game of strategy. No at tempi was made at the kiekolf meeting to organize org-anize formally. I'.y mutual agreement, this was postponed postpon-ed to a later dale. Discussion was limited to choosing a regular re-gular meeting time ami place. As of now, the new chess club will meet evcrv Tuesday, from 7 p.m. lo about 1 1 p.m. in room No. 8 at Grand County High school. Anyone who is interested in playing chess, or in learning learn-ing this challenging game, is welcome to attend lulure club meetings and join the club. Time at the initial meeting, meet-ing, aside from the few minutes spent choosing a regular re-gular meeting time and place was devoted lo get-acquainted chess play. Almost everyone every-one brought chess sets along and, as with most chess clubs lime devoled to anything but playing lh(! game was kept lo a minimum. Alter three beginners wen? given enough instructions to gel them going, go-ing, everyone quickly got down to ihe game, swapping opponents now and then for variety. Several of those at tbi.i lirst meeting of Moab's chess club expressed their appreciation appre-ciation of the efforts made by I wo Moab businesses toward to-ward helping the club get started the Moab Times-Independent Times-Independent for Die gratis publicity and announcements, .and Moab Lanes for providing Ihe initial meeting place. And, of course, continuing gratitude is due lluss Don-oghue, Don-oghue, Director of Adult and Community Education for Grand County, for his efforts ef-forts in arranging for the regular use of a school room for chess club meetings. ' Club members are considering consid-ering several ideas for increasing in-creasing community interest in chess and for gaining ad- ditional active members. One of these is a public demonstration demon-stration match in which the strongest club player challenges chal-lenges all comers to simultaneous simul-taneous play. In such a match challengers line up along tables, ta-bles, each with a chess board, and the strongest player plays them all at the same time, moving from board to board and making a move at each lis he passes. In this kind of play, even fair players have a chance, lo beat the stronger player because of the brief time he has for study at each board. Of course, such a demonstration demonstra-tion match could only be held alter a period of "shakedown" "shake-down" play among club mem. hers lo determine who would . be the most capable at simultaneous sim-ultaneous yitiy, but with the enthusiasm shown at the ' first meeting, this shouldn't take long. |
