Show Friday Afternoon Teacher Planning Session Initiated for Elementary Schools in Moab In order that. Individualized Individualiz-ed programs can become more effective and offer belter bel-ter educational opportunities lor children, Friday afternoons after-noons from 1 p.m. to 4 p. in. will be utilized by teachers at Southeast and Helen M Knight, Elementary Schools as planning and conference time beginning the week of Feb. M, it was announced by C. Robert Sundwall, Superintendent Superin-tendent of Schools, Wednesday. Wednes-day. While the children of the two schools will not be present, pres-ent, there will be no loss of instructional lime during the week as class time will be. extended during the first four days of the week. In making the announcement, announce-ment, Superintendent Sundwall Sund-wall pointed out that an individualized in-dividualized concept had been in operation at the Southeast school for the past one and one half years and that plans were going forward to adopt an individualized plan at the Helen M. Knight school next year. "Our experience at Southeast South-east and our investigation of how other such programs throuehout the state operate indicate our successes and our problems are similar. Undoubtedly, the primary problem other schools have faced and the one which continues con-tinues to bother us, is the lack of time teachers have for planning for the needs of individual children, for conferences and consultation, and for follow-up,'1 he said, adding, "We have examined what' is happening in other districts dis-tricts where such time is provided and find it is working work-ing well." An additional change will be mnao in the kindergarten. The morning sessions will be utilized for intensifying specific spe-cific experiences directly concerned with a particular concept or skill. This will be on a small group basis. The chidien to participate will be those for whom the specific e'pericr"e will most benefit and v'. be selected each week by the teacher. This will include children ' from both morning and afternoon sessions. Teachers will work only on projects or for purposes directly dir-ectly related to the needs of pupils. The Friday afternoon time will in no way supple: ment out-of-school time asked ask-ed of teachers nor to other, wise provide time for sucl) things as correcting pupij papers, grading, etc. Such activities that will be included are: . 1. Individualization of materials. ma-terials. 2. Coordination of materials mater-ials and of programs between be-tween teachers. 3. Planning new materia's and programs. 4. Revising and updating present materials and programs. pro-grams. 5. Consultation and in-ser- vice r-xpr-ridnees. : 0. Conferences wilh oth'-r teachers and wilh princip;'!. 7. Conferences with parents and with personnel from other oth-er agencies. 8. Other activities or efforts ef-forts as might be needed h;r individual cases.
