These lamps arc part of a display which Collection of Kerosene Lamps On Display a! Mcub Museum On display this month at the Moab Museum is a collection of kerosene lamps owned by Mrs. Kstel Avery. About 30 lamps of all sizes and shapes make . up the collection. Mrs. Avery began the collection because she loved lov-ed pretty glassware, and because, she stated, "I had the kind of pjirents that taught me to preserve and not destroy." With this upbringing, Mrs. Avery was taught to keep anything of value to anyone and feels that to destroy possessions of persons per-sons who had died was disrespectful to their memory. me-mory. With this philosophy Mrs. Avery not only has a collection of old lamps but has in her possession her father's McGuffeys Readers, her grandfather's watch, the family Bible given to her grandmother in 1S59, a chest of drawers draw-ers purchased in 1900 second-hand, an old salt dip nearly 150 years old and many other family items. With the coming of the RFA into the rural areas. Mrs. Avery stated that siie felt a little sad to see the old kerosene lamps being pushed aside. Since she already had two Aladdin lamps of her own that she and her husband had started star-ted with after their nar- rh'ge, she decided to preserve pre-serve what few she could. Her collection is presently present-ly about 3t). Include. 1 in the group of lamps are two old Model T Ford lampt which were found in a cellar cel-lar in 1942. Of her collection, Mrs. Avery says, "On our vacation vaca-tion trips, I try to find old lamps to bring home as souvenirs of our trip. When you have started a collection, you'd be surprised sur-prised how willing friends and relatives are to contribute con-tribute to it, which makes it even more priceless to you." |
