Mr. and Mrs. Malcolm Polltano, Pol-ltano, Jr. have recently finished fin-ished their new store east of town on the Highway and it Is most modern and beautiful, as well as well stocked with merchandise easy to locate and collect. "Young" Malcolm has been In business In Green River all his adult life. He ran the Texaco Station for a ' few years, then joined his father in the old Polltano store, and bought out Malcolm Polltaso, Sr. In 1959. His father retired, re-tired, but was a dally part of the store routine, always welcomed wel-comed and respected by the young couple and their employees. em-ployees. He now goes down to the new store, which he admires very much. Malcolm Polltano, Sr. be- gan the mercantile business .when he and his brother Frank opened Polltano Mercantile In 1909. In 1910, they bought out Charles Gibbons at the old store where the Florence Flor-ence Seely home Is at present. pre-sent. In 1918, Malcolm and R.A. Woods went Into partnership part-nership and opened the store which stayed In business until this new store was opened. Through the years, the grocery gro-cery and meat market, expanding ex-panding Into a clothing store when his brother Frank sold his store next door to them, has furnished people of the town and ranchers and mln-.ers mln-.ers in the surrounding area with supplies. The Polllanos came toAm-ercla toAm-ercla from Italy before the turn of the century. Peter Polltano came with his son Frank, then 11 years of age, In 1896. After traveling around the country, he landed In Green River, where he was given a contract to care for the D&RG coal chutes. With this permanent job, he sent for his wife, Rose, and their two other sons, Joe and Malcolm. They arrived In May, 1898. Malcolm was five years old, and lived here the rest of his life, receiving his education edu-cation In the local schools. His mother Rose Polltano, died. In 1955 at the age of 103. In 1914. Malcolm married Rosa Vetere, who came from Italy to marry him. He met her in Denver, and they were married there. They had two sons and three daughters, all of them but Malcolm moving mov-ing away from Green River. Their youngest son, Ernie, died a few years ago of arthritis. arth-ritis. Malcolm Pol It anoi Jr. married mar-ried Norma Brock of Cortez, Colorado, and they had two daughters, who grew up here in the lovely home he built near the school. Acouple of years ago, Malcolm Mal-colm bought the ground east of the city, which adjoined some he already owned, and started planning to build a new store out on tlw highway. After the floors were poured last fall, and the building put up he spent much of his time this winter making shelves and partitions and other work to finish the store. He is a master carpenter, and his work shows to advantage in the new store. In February, the equipment, showcases, freezers, meat market equipment, and merchandise mer-chandise were moved from the old store, and the new market opened for business on Saturday, March 8. It is a fine place to shop, and the community is Justly proud of Its appearance and utility. Malcolm and Norma are some of our young people who did not leave Green River, Ri-ver, but stayed to make it their home and conduct a thriving business, making this a great place to live. |
