Jazz means many things QJ: to many people, but the Stu-; Stu-; dlo Band plays It for ev-I ev-I eryone, regardless of their Jjf musical tastes. The Studio I I Band is the official tour-1 tour-1 lng Jazz ensemble of the W United States Army, cur-i cur-i rently on spring tour April 7 through May 13. They will f arrive In Moab from a per-1 per-1 tormance in Durango FrV- w day, and travel from here to Price and Salt Lake City for performances before going go-ing on to Nevada, California, Califor-nia, Oregon and Washington Washing-ton and finally home to Washington, D.C. The director of the 20-plece 20-plece group, Sgt. Maj. Dave Wolpe, points out that the program will Illustrate the evolution of jazz and display dis-play the different and changing chan-ging styles from the inception in-ception of the Big Bands to present-day jazz and jazz-rock. In addition to the jazz numbers, a special rendition rendi-tion of John Philip Sousa's immortal march, "The Stars and Stripes Forever," will be played by the band. The Studio Band Is an entirely new concept in military mi-litary musical organizations. organi-zations. Since its creation in the fall of 1969, this elite Big Band ensemble has earned widespread acclaim with Its distinctive musical styling. The musicians of the group show remarkable versatility in their handling handl-ing of tunes ranging from the Big Band sounds of the '40's to the most popular songs of today's youth. All members are chosen by competitive audition, and come from the country's leading conservatories, recording re-cording centers, schools of music and network radio and television staffs. Audiences across the nation na-tion have acclaimed this young organization to be one of the finest performing groups in America. The Studio Stu-dio Band presents the music mu-sic of yesterday and today in a program that young and old alike have enjoyed. |
