Show Billbugs Attock Moab Again Billbugs are causing damage dam-age to lawns this spring. The insects have been found in the north west section of town, along, Mi Vida and Park Drives, in the area of Helen M. Knight school. However, this is not the only section of town that has billbugs. Now is the time for all homeowners to cooperate in a control program to prevent the spreading of this pest. Unless there is complete cooperation in the neighborhood, individuals will not be able to prevent reinfestation from neighboring lawns. Check your lawn. If the sod becomes dry and yellow, and you can peel it back to expose small white grubs-you have billbugs. These insects are beetles that become active in May and lay their eggs in the grass stems. After hatching, the grubs feed on the stems, then move into the soil to feed on the crown and roots. The grubs kill the grass by cutting the roots off just below the ground. These insects may be controlled most effectively by applying insecticide to your lawn in late April and May to kill the adults before they lay their eggs. The grubs in the sod can also be killed by applying insecticides now to prevent extensive damage. The following insecticides and application raters per 1000 square feet of lawn will control billbugs: Diazinon 25 percent wettable powder, eight ounces; oun-ces; Diazinon two percent granules, five pounds; Diazinon Diazi-non 50 percent emulsifiable concentrate, six fluid ounces; Dursban 2 E, three fluid ounces; Dursban one-half percent per-cent granules 10 to 20 pounds. Granules may be applied ap-plied with a fertilizer spreader spread-er and liquid formulations may be applied with a sprinkling can or sprayer. Complete details for controlling control-ling billbugs may be found in Insect Answers and Controlling Control-ling Lawn Insects. These two publications are available at the courthouse. Let's all work together to rid Moab of these pests! |
