Show Attorney General Speaker lit Chamber Meeting Vern Romney, Utah Attorney Attor-ney General for two terms, was the featured speaker at the weekly meeting of the Moab Chamber of Commerce last Tuesday. Romney is concerned about taxes and the current number of federal domestic programs that require taxes for their continuation. He used several statistics to back up his concern. In the beginning of World War II the national debt was billion dollars. Today the national debt totals $350 billion. He asked, "Do we have less crime? Do we have greater personal security? Are our children better off due to the large amount - spent through the educational budgets?" bud-gets?" He felt that the answer was "No." Romney said that every si"gle family in the United States owes $7,500 'on the national debt. According to Romney, -during the Eisenhower adminis- tration there were 45 domestic programs provided for with the tax dollar. One authority has recently estimated that there are currently 1,570 programs being supported with the tax dollar. "Taxation is killing the businessman," said Romney. It takes the average man 112 days to pay his local, state and federal taxes. Bread carries 150 separate taxes on it, eggs has 100 and the building of a private dwelling is taxed 700 separate ways. Romney foresees better cooperation between the private pri-vate sector and state government. govern-ment. He cited the recent legislation against shoplifting as one way that the two areas could work together. He would like to establish more citizen participation in government. He closed with a challenge to the Chamber members, "I would like to see all of you become involved in politics this year."
