Show Over a million Visitors Hit Lake Powell in 1975 Glen Canyon National Recreation Rec-reation Area received 1,139, 275 visitors during 1975, according to recent figures released by the National Park Service. This represented ( a 2 decrease from 1974 visitors that totaled 1,159,383. Orange Cliffs experienced the biggest drop, down 40, 2,220 in 1974 and only 1,336 visitors in 1975. Wahweap was the most popular attraction in the Glen Canyon Area with 931,376, still a 5 decrease from 1974. All other areas (Lees Ferry, Bullfrog, Halls Crossing, Hite and Escalante) experienced increased visitations varying from 5 to 35. According to the statistics in December fishing was the most popular form of recreation recrea-tion with 1,489 special use permits requested. Back country coun-try camping followed closely with the request of 1,243 special use permits. The fishermen preferred Wahweap (689) but the campers preferred preferr-ed Bullfrog (707). In the yearly totals, back country camping led the list of special uses, 378,122, with ' National Park Service Campground Camp-ground utilizing 245,955 permits. per-mits. 1975 totals for other special permits were: boat days, 151,598; fishermen 195,535; beach use, 34,016; and picnickers, 17,984. Rainbow Bridge National Monument also had increased visitation last year (up 18), as did Carl Hayden Visitor Center (up 7). |
