Cemetery Report Mrs. Florence Howland, president of Woman's Club, reports that the Woman's Club project of working on the cemetery in Elgin has been mainly finished. This project was under the chairmanship of Mrs. Louise Sherrill, who spent a good deal of time on it, as well as several trips to Moab to straighten out the plats and to secure several rights of way for the pipe line. A pipe line has been installed from the pump at the river to a big tank on the hill, and distribution pipelines have been laid around the cemetery. ceme-tery. A number of trees were planted last spring, and a good portion of them live. With water to irrigate early next spring, they should make a good growth next year. The City has put in a good bit of money and considerable time on the cemetery this past year. Particiaption of the general public in cleaning up the graves before snow falls has been disappointing. One of the most effective programs the Woman's Club sponsored was making a plat of the cemetery and presenting present-ing a copy to the City for hanging in the City Hall. Bill Robison surveyed the tract and drew the map, marking the few graves that are unknown with red. The map is a fine job, and the Club is pleased to have it done. The Volunteer Fire Department Depart-ment also spent time and money on the cemetery project the past year. They helped plant the trees, and kept the tank full of water until the pipe was laid. This was an all-summer's job, and the Club is most grateful to them. Mayor Hart is trying to get Emery County to move toward assessing a tax on the ranches out of the city limits, and putting that money with a fund from Grand County and some city money, and appointing a committee to keep the cemetery ceme-tery project going. This entails a contract amone the three participants, which will take some time to set up. Gun Club Protests Pat Gahagen, president of the Gun Club reports that there has been considerable damage to the trap shooting storage house at the gun club. Anyone wishing to use the equipment there is welcome to do so, and there is no charge, but the club asks that a key be obtained instead of breaking the door down. Thre are several keys in town, one at Ray's Tavern and one at the Sundance Hardware, as well as several in possession of the gun club members. Trip To Mexico Mr. and Mrs. Nolan Curtis joined about 200 other square dancers of the Rocky Mountain Square Dance Association for a trip to Mexico. A plane was chartered, which flew them to Mexico City and they took a bus for a side trip to Acapulco. At Mexico City, the Utahns joined a Mexican dance group, who mostly did folk dances, but who joined in with and enjoyed American square dancing. dan-cing. Also, the square dancers attended the Mexican Ballet at a theater in Mexico City. At Acapulco, some went fishing, some went swimming in the ocean and most of them took the boat tour around the bay. They report that a number of movie stars have beautiful homes around the ocean. Nolan reports he didn't enjoy the bull fights much, he feels the bull in not given a sporting chance. |
