Show Do Your Own Thinking, Supt. Bell Admonishes SANDY "We want you to be a bit independent and rebellious if that means you are determined to do your own thinking and make up your own mind about your future," Dr. T. H. Bell, state sta-te superintendent of public instruction, told a group of junior high school studnts Wednesday, (October 29). This independence and non-conformity should be based on the thoughtful consideration con-sideration of a clear and healthy mind considering truthful choices based upon facts and solid reasoning, h'i explained to a Mt. Jordon Junior High School assembly assem-bly here. Then we know that "America will be in good hands," he said. He added that it was an important part of patriotism for each student to build his own future and to get the most from what is offered in "our great public school system." He listed many definitions of patriotism for the group. Among these were: "Patriotism "Pat-riotism is disagreeing without with-out being disabreeable. It is dissenting within the framework frame-work of the law and within the bounds of moral and ethical eth-ical standards of appropriate appropri-ate behavior becoming of an American citizen." "Patriotism is obeying the laws and supporting law enforcement. en-forcement. It is compliance with (he law of the land regardless re-gardless of whether one a-grees a-grees with the necessity or value of all of the laws. It implies a responsibility to act when someone else flagrantly flag-rantly breaks this law. |
