Show District Advisor Jan Oli-veto Oli-veto from Price, District Chairman Danny Winfield & Field Aide Kathy Purvance from Moab spent 2 days last week "down South" helping troops get organized for the coming year. Jacque Bane, leader in La Sal had a short training' session early Wed. morning & then on to Monticello where last year's leader Julie Wood with the State Library Bookmobile Book-mobile is getting leaders organized or-ganized for this year. Julie donated several boxes of books for the Thompson library li-brary as did the Monticello County Library. Wed. afternoon we met at the Bluff Elementary School with Leaders Esther Reddoor & Debbie Laurio, showed a film about Girl Scouting to parents & girls & gave some training to the leaders. Your writer met and had an interesting inter-esting visit with Alvin Reiner who writes the "Bluff Stuff' for the San Juan Record & has agreed to write Girl Scout News of that area for the Record. Thursday moraine found us at Montezuma Creek. Meetings Meet-ings are a little different there, the girls meet twice a week for 30 minutes during their lunch hour as so many live such a distance from the school they are unable to stay after and miss the bus. This way they are able to belong to Girl Scouts. Mary Jane Benal- f ly who has been a junior leader for 4 years is going to J take a year off from Scouting to go back to school and finish up for her teaching certificate but will be a Troop Committee member and help get the new leaders going. Debbie Little took a year off last year to welcome a new baby in the family and will be back as Brownie leader again this year with Ardith Massey helping. Both these young ladies are tutors at the school. Debbie has convinced her sister-in-law Sydney Browning Brown-ing & her mother-in-law Fern Matthews to help with the girls this year and it looks like we will have full and overflowing overflow-ing troops at Montezuma Creek. Thursday afternoon we met with Beth Smith of Blanding who has recently moved to Blanding ' from Denver and wondered why we didn't have Girl Scout troops in Blanding. She wrote to the Council last spring and was a tremendous help getting the use of the school for us to show a film to interested parents and girls. Punch and Girl Scout cookies were served and mass registration regis-tration followed. Looks like we will have 2 full troops and possibly a third if leadership can be found. Beth has a Girl Scout background as a girl and as a leader in other states and infected everyone present with her enthusiasm. |
