By ‘‘packing'"' this convention, which was held in Baltimore in May, 1835, with delegates which he controlled, Jackson dictated the nomination of Van Buren for President and Richard M. Johnson of Kentucky for vice president despite the opposition of the southern wing of the party. This wing bolted the party and nominated Sen. Hugh L. White of Tennessee for President and John Tyler of Virginia for vice president. Despite this defection in the party ranks, Van Buren and Johnson managed to win the election of 1836 because the Whigs were also split. They had nominated Gen. William Henry Harrison of Ohio for President and Francis Granger for vice president, but there was another Whig ticket in the field headed by Daniel Webster of Massachusetts for President and the same vice presiden- Francis Granger. In the election Van Buren carried 15 states and received 170 electoral votes, enough to win for him over Harrison's 73 electoral votes, Webster's 14, White's 26, and the 11 of South Carolina which went to Willis P. RAYNER TROY. C . Andrars. Title page of a campaign Harrison's running mate the Democrat John Tyler. Harrison's military record was his chief recommendation as a presidential candidate. The son of Benjamin Harrison of Virginia, a signer of the Declaration of Independence, he had joined the army as an ensign at the age of 19, and had served against the Indians in Ohio under St. Clair and Wayne. In 1795 he was promoted to captain and placed in command of Fort Washington on the present site of Cincinnati. Two years later he resigned his commission and was appointed secretary of the Northwest Territory from which in 1790 he w&s chosen a delegate to congress. When the territory was divided in 1801 he was made governor of the new Territory of Indiana and that position won the victory was killed. Promoted to the rank of major-general, he resigned from the army in 1816 when he was elected to congress from Ohio. After serving three years in congress, he was elected a state senator in 1819 and five song of 1840. aristocratic Van Buren was said to be living at the White House. Whig orators denounced the Democratic candidate's extravagance. They declared he was "maintaining a royal establishment at the cost of the nation. Will the people feel inclined to support their chief servant in a palace as splendid as that of the Caesars and as richly adorned as the proudest Asiatic mansion?"' Instead of defending their candidate from such exaggerated charges as this, the Democrats added fuel to the flame by the names they called Harrison-‘‘a super-annuated old woman,'' ‘‘a pitiable dotard,'"' ‘‘a granny," ‘‘a red-petticoat general,'' and ‘‘the hero of forty defeats.'' All of this, plus the Whigs depicting him as a great military hero and a simple farmer, served to endear Harrison to the ‘‘common pee-pul,"' especially the farmers and backwoodsmen. The alliterative ‘‘Tippecanoe and Tyler, Too!'' became their favorite slogan and when they weren't shouting that, they were chanting ‘‘Van, Van is a used-up man!'' or "‘With Tip and Tyler, We'll Bust Van's Biler!"' A Stirring Symbol. Not only did the Whigs have such effective slogans as those quoted above but they also had a striking symbol for their cause. years later he was sent to the United States senate. In 1828 he was appointed minister to Colom- bia but he was recalled when Jackson became President. A Candidate Minus a Platform. In nominating Harrison for President in 1840 the Whigs failed to provide him with any platform of party principles for the very good reason that they had none except that of wanting to be in power. But, as it turned out, they didn't need a platform. Despite the fact that there was great dissatisfaction with Van Buren's administration, largely due to the depression which followed the panic of 1837 and a growing feeling that Van Buren had become ‘"‘too aristocratic' for the common people, the Democrats might easily have won the election. They were the party in power, had all the resources of patronage and their leader was known as the ‘‘Little Magician," a tribute politician. to his astuteness They mounted log cabins on wheels and drew them through the streets with teams of white a horses. At their rallies hard as cider But Van Buren's followers made several very bad political blun- ders and the Whigs were quick to take advantage of them. One of the Whig newspapers, was not very enthusiastic which about the party's candidate, printed the statement that ‘"‘give him a barrel of hard cider and a pension of $2,000 a year and, our word for it, he will sit the remainder of his days in a log cabin by the side of a ‘sea coal' fire and study moral philosophy.'' Candidate of the ‘Plain People.' Despite the fact that Harrison lived as a well-to-do country gen- tleman at his home, North Bend, in Ohio, the Whigs industriously cultivated the idea that he lived in a log cabin, toiled in the fields as a simple farmer and was indeed one of the ‘*plain people.'' In contrast to his Simplicity was the palatial luxury in which the The was freely dispensed-in fact, the campaign of 1840 has come down in history as the "Log Cabin-Hard Cider Campaign." Never before-and never since -had there been such a noisy campaign and one so completely dominated by emotion. And so William Henry Harrison was borne this into the flood of White House ballyhoo on (even though that word hadn't yet been coined). But it was a hollow vic- tory: for the Whigs. Within 9 month after Harrison's inauguration, he died-and John Tyler, the Democrat, became President. Throughout his administration he quarreled with the leaders of the party that had elected him. So four years later they turned at last to Henry Clay but he was de. feated by James K. She is 32, has been married eight years, and she says she is scared. ‘Dan and I married for love, and for six or seven months we revelled in our love and home and plans," she writes. ‘‘But before the first anniversary Dan was deeply attracted to one of the nurses in his uncles' office. But it shook the ground under my feet, and I never felt quite the same confidence in him again. ‘"‘He was thrilled when our little boy was born, and said he hoped we would have three or four children. But Peter was not a year old when I went away to the country for three weeks and during my absence Dan carried on an affair with a divorced woman, who had always said she was my friend. When I got home he confessed that he had been carried away by temporary emotional excitement, and that it was over, but Mrs. B. came to see me, showing me a letter in which Dan had written that if I would give him a divorce they could be married. Bears Sorrow Silently. "This disgusted me, and I had a time of despair. For weeks I did not speak to Dan, and as I would not tell even my own mother of what had occurred I had a lonely and uncomfortable time. Eventually we were reconciled in a sort of surface fashion, and after some months, convinced of his reform, I returned to his room and enjoyed a short time of confidence and happiness. Our second son was born, and Dan was so devoted to all three of us, and so helpful and patient that I thought myself a fortunate woman, and that our troubles were over. *"My boys are now six and three. "Now, I know your advice. I've been reading your column all my married life. I know all about being independent of anyone else for my happiness, and building a life around myself and my boys. But what I want to ask is, what is marriage? Ifitisa relationship that nine times out of ten grows irksome and stupid to both parties after a few years, and is maintained only because of children, or society, or family dignity, or business considerations, isn't it a failure? Most of my friends are already taking a sort of seriocomic attitude toward their mates. To a great many of them the sudden ending of the married state,' through any cause, would be a great relief. Don't you believe this is true of all but the exceptional marriages? A Five Year Plan. ‘My own idea is that all marriages ought automatically to be cancelled at about five years, at which time the man and woman should be forced to live apart for six months or so, to see how each feels about resuming the relationship. It is frightful to feel that the step you took confidently in girlhood is holding you in prison for life.'"' That is only part of the letter, but sufficient to show that Mary is one of the great class of wives who feel a childish despair upon discovering that husbands are just human beings after all, selfish and stupid and subject to flattery and apt to get bored with home ties of wife, children, familiar dinner table, domestic routine. Stigma of Divorce Removed. Truly today's husband is a little more trying along these lines than his father was, because of social changes in the last 50 years. With divorce so common an escape, marriage has indeed come to be something of what Mary hints, at least to those whose religious scruples do not prohibit divorce. Many a marriage breaks up in its fourth, or fifth, or.seventh year, and many State laws insist upon a_ period during which the couple, who seek divorce, may have a chance to think things over in cool blood. Fifty years ago a husband had to stand by his wife, and a wife by her home and children, for divorce carries a bitter stigma, and few women could become self-supporting. These restrictions are swept away now, an enormous percentage of the names in the Social Register are those of divorced men and women, and what the Social Register does the lessprominent circles think it right to do. So that the flirtatious detached woman your husband meets in his business may well feel that she is free to win him and hold him. There were abuses and difficulties and domestic martyrs in the old days, of course. But also there was Stability, there was security, and both those things are very valuable.
