March 5 - The grazing service needs more men "right out there in the field," its directcr told a house subcom mittee, to give stockmen the service they "are entitled to." Director R. H. Rutledge appeared before the house group during hearings on the interior deartment appropriations bill, which Was reported to the house yesterday. He asked that $1,000.090 De appropriated for the service for fiscal 1941, instead of the $750,000 recommended in the budget. He said the service collects about $1,000,000 a year from the 20,000 citizens who graze about 11,000,000 head of livestock under the Taylor grazing act. "We are collecting this from the stockmen for the use of the range and we are not giving the service which I think congress intended us to give, nor the service that the stockmen are entitled to." He said the service could do a | "pretty good job" in supervising 53 grazing _ districts embracing 139,000,009 acres if given three quarters of a cent an acre. but it has been "trying to get along" on | half a cent an acre. The only ways of increasing revenue-other than. through larger appropriations-would be to tmprove the carrying Capacity of the Tange so it could take more stock, or raise grazing fees, since the range is "fully stocked now, Maybe overstocked to some extent." He will not recommend raising fees at the present time, he told the subcommitiee. Mrs. Lula Goodman is spending the week at Salt Lake City visiting her son. Henry C.
