Show local civic club votes to join in celebration on completion of utah colorado highway the colorado utah highway celebration to be staged at grand junction on september 24 and 25 will be attended by a delegation of the moab lions club it was decided at a meeting of that body held yesterday noon at the merchants hotel an invitation from the grand junction lions club asking that a moab delegation attend the fete was accepted and it Is probable that a large number of local people will motor to the colorado city to join in the festivities the celebration Is being conducted by the grand junction and price chambers of commerce to commemorate the completion of a gravel highway through eastern utah to grand junction governor dem of utah and governor adams of colorado will both be in attendance and the celebration will be the most elaborate ever staged at grard junction C S thomson H W balsly and L L taylor were appointed as a committee of the moab lions club to arrange for the attendance of a delegation of moab people at the grand junction celebration A number of important matters were taken up by the lions at their meeting which was one of the most important held this year by th organization following out a recommendation of the national organization the club voted to sponsor a general observance of constitution week from september 13 to 20 D S L mccorkle rev W E parks and bishop W D hammond were appointed as a committee to arrange for proper observance of the week in moab each of the two local churches will conduct suitable programs and the week will be observed at an assembly meeting in the high school on friday september 18 to which the general public will be invited A letter was received from the associated socia ted civic clubs of southern utah protesting the proposal of government officials to withdraw from entry several thousand acres of land in the arizona strip which it is proposed to add to national parks the matter was discussed and the club voted to oppose such withdrawal of lands J A H 0 green and president C A robertson were appointed to draw up a suitable resolution opposing the withdrawal and send copies to representatives in congress H W balsley a member of the major activities committee of the club was called on for a report he stated that his committee had agreed that one of the outstanding needs of the community was the planting of lawns and shrubbery in the county courthouse and public school grounds ane installation of pipe lines for irrigation purposes would be necessary to the proper landscaping of the public grounds mr balsley stated the school board he said had been approached pro ached on the subject and bad agreed to lend every cooperation to the county in carrying through the project the lions club voted to maae this a major community project of the organization and the committee was asked to continue its investigation on the subject to the end that the project may be carried to completion at the earliest possible time it was reported at the meeting that the casket truck recently purchased by the lions club for the use of the community had been received the truck which cost around 50 will be used at funerals in the community it Is being purchased through donations of members and the public a few dollars remaining to be raised to complete the payment tha committee which had charge of this project consisted of rev W E parks D S L mccorkie and R J the lions club which Is he civic organization in moab expects to tape up i number of community projects during the coming fall and winter for the betterment of conditions in moab and southeastern utah generally members are evincing a keen interest in the affairs of the organization and undoubtedly great community benefits will result from the work of the organization |
