Show EDWIN THATCHER WOLVERTON the funeral of edwin thatcher wolverton was held at green river friday november conducted by rev phipps of the community church burial was in the elgin cemetery edwin thatcher wolverton as bom february 4 1862 at deer isle maine and departed this life at fruita colorado november 25 1930 aged 68 bears 9 months and 21 days he was united in marriage in june 1886 at leadville colorado to wll mont to this union were bom two sons and three daughters he is survived by his widow mrs wilmont wolverton his sons N E wolverton of palisade colorado and T S wolverton of Seg and his daughter mrs eald mcgee of tulsa oklahoma he came to colorado as a very young man and his life has been identified with various mining enterprises in colorado and utah he served m responsible positions in mines at alma breckenridge leadville and oilman colorado coming to utah almost 30 years ago he located the manganese deposits at little brande now ploy which were extensively worked tor several years during which time he was superintendent in charge later he engaged in engineering and location work for eastern people interested te in the development of southeastern utah in pursuit of this duty he made an accurate sectional survey of the intensely rough country south of green river and bordering on the cataract canyon of the colorado river this necessitated the carrying of a heavy transit up cliffs and across canyons never before traversed by man and an intimate knowledge of every square mile of this territory it is quite possible that he was the only white man to penetrate certain unexplored territory east of the cataract canyon abounding in scenic wonders and remains of prehistoric cities at one time he devoted considerable attention to the possibilities of navigation on the green and colorado rivers and ran his motor boats from Green river to moab in the lecent litigation between the united states and the state of utah over the ownership of the riverbeds river beds of the green and colorado rivers he was of great as si stanca to the state of utah by reason his practical and first hand information upon every phase of the subject and the favorable decision for the state was no doubt largely due to lus testimony he was skilled and a close observer and his knowledge of southeastern utah was greater than any other man the last few years of his life were devoted to the development of a mine near the summit of mt pennell of the henry mountains he was a man of great physical strength and determination of purpose and allowed no difficulty or hardship to deter him from his purpose contributed tri buted |
