Show AIRPLANE CRASHES WHEN MOTOR STALLS charles mcnamara of grand junction a fireman on the D R G W railroad sustained a bad cut across his ippei up in addition to numerous bruises in an airplane crack up at moab sunday afternoon A A sherred pilot of the ship sustained minor bruises the plane was badly damaged sherred who Is vice president and field manager of the mesa air transport inc of grand junction had abeen at moab during the county fair having two planes here sherred was pilot of one and del bullock of grand junction piloted the other they made exhibition flights and took passengers up during the fair celebration the crash came shortly antei the two planes took off for their return to grand junction their supply of high test aviation gasoline was exhausted and they decided to fly back with ordinary gasoline sherred with mcnamara as passenger had reached an altitude of about 2000 feet and was over the colorado river when the motor stopped he coasted back to the landing field at the J M ranch but due to the fact that his motor was dead sherred was compelled to land cross wind As the plane touched the ground a gust of wind tipped the ship over on a wing and it then nosed into the ground and landed on its back three wings were sheared oft and the landing agsar wrecked the fuselage and motor were undamaged in the crash the fuel line broke and sprayed gas bwy the engine which fortunately was cold and did not ignite the gasoline had this happened both men would doubtless have been burnea to death mcnamara and sherred were taken to the local hospital where their injuries were treated A large gash across mcnamara s upper lip wa sewed up and the men were able to return to grand junction monday the plane was loaded on a truck and hauled back to grand junction for repairs mr sherred had flown his ship over hours and this was his first mishap this was also the first accident to befall the reesa air transport which had a reword of over hours of passenger flying without a single mishap of any kind tre two planes considerably to the fair program they flew over the grounds each afternoon county teachers who were in moat thelast of the week to attend the fall and teachers institute included mis grace stegall thompsons Thomp sons miss sylvia harris valley city miss margarel miller castle valley and mrs florence G gilbert elgin |
