Show successful INSTITUTE OF TEACHERS IS HELD As a part of the educational system of utah each county school district under the general guidance and control of the state department of education arranges for an annual institute with th state department made responsible under the law for the speakers for a number of years past the grand county institute has been called at the time and place of the county fair thus permitting a certain amount of blending together of the two functions the fair Is held on the last three days of the week the first of which Is used by the teachers for their institute work and one of the departments of the fair is always an exhibit of school work the instructors sent this year were two of the staff members of the state department lofter Bj amason supervisor of junior high schools and miss matilda peterson supervisor of primary grades the closing of the schools for two days enables the teachers from the outside points of the county to come in and give their personal attention to the arrangement of the exhibits as well as to attend the sessions of the institute each school of the county was represented in the exhibit hall this year the attendance of the teachers was one hundred per cent in a brief business session presided over by the local president james M harvey it was decided by a unanimous vote to join the utah educational association and the national ss as a body at the general session thursday morning prof Bj amason read a highly technical paper on the junior high school advancing the ideas that the work of this branch of the school should be exploratory rather than exact and that the pupils othis department part ment should do all of their work under the direction of the teacher following the general session the teachers separated for departmental work the primary section being addressed by miss peterson on the course of study she was very much at home in this department as the outline had been written by her the high school session spent the time of this meeting in a discussion of pre sent day high school problems with the instructor brinnin brin pin vividly before the teachers methods for dealing with the problems of ahe day at the general session of the afternoon ass mss feterson emoke interestingly of her varied experiences in dlf parts of the state one of the outstanding addresses of the institute was given by supervisor Bj amason on bis impressions of the schools of europe especially the danish folk schools which he had visited on a recent trip abroad the sessions lexe enlivened by music produced under the direction of miss bethel watts with miss lorene as accompanist |
