funeral services monday afternoon over the remains of richard D westwood deputy sheriff of grand county and marshal of moab who waS thursday evening by two desperadoes during a jail break the funeral was a wonderful testimonial of the respect and affection which the community held tor for marshal westwood whose life was spent in the service of the public the services were presided over by bishop W D hammond the opening number was a hymn sometime we well understand by the choir after which C L christensen gave the benediction rulon somerville and miss agnes somerville sang a duet nearer dear saviour to thee the first speaker was george A hurst of blanding who talked on spiritual 1 lines he praised the kind and charitable 1 nature of mr We westwood stood who would always share his last crust of bread with any person in want W R mcconkle told of his long acquaintance with the slain officer marshal westwood West wod he said was a man who would assume responsibilities pf af citizenship and was always ready to give his time and his life it necessary for the public interests he ile stood for the right at all times county clerk H W balsley told of his association with mr westwood who he said was an outstanding worker for the public welfare he i went about doing good all his life and was ever generous and charitable in his death the speaker said the county has sustained an irreparable loss the choir sang how gentle the lord lords s commands and the invocation was off offered ered by A C folster at the cemetery the dedicatory prayer was offered by P M shafer and the choir sang nearer my god to thee richard D westwood was bom born aug 9 1863 at Spring springville ville utah and was 66 years old at the time of his death he was married to martha A wilcox at thistle utah on may 23 1887 and in 1889 the couple moved to moab to them twelve chil children dien were born four of whom died in infancy those surviving besides his widow are mrs charles cato cisco mrs W F may grand junction mrs ruth johnson moab nell westwood moab mrs L W morse salt lake city vere westwood hazelton idaho mrs P R double breckenridge colo and miss anna westwood moab all ali ot of mr West westwood woods s children were at moab for the funeral in addition to numerous other relatives from various sections of utah those hom outside points who came in for the funeral were mr and mrs sisters of mr westwood mrs joe carison of salt lake city mrs sarah bills of mt pleasant mrs elizabeth hurst of blanding mrs peter meiling of payson and J H of la sal sisters and brother of mrs westwood other relatives colln were arthur hurst and mr and mrs oscar hurst of blanding mr and mrs steve day of la sal mr and mrs R W and mr and mrs wilford bayder gaard of mt pleasant mrs olive clayton and children of ogden mrs oren of thompsons Thomp sons and mr and mrs henry wilcox and daughter of green river mrs F M of moab is also a surviving sister of mr westwood an interesting career of public service comes to a close in the death of R D westwood prom the time he arrived in grand county in 1889 he took mi active part in the affairs of the county and in bringing law and order to eastern utah then sparsely populated and the haven of outlaws and fugitives who came to this rough and inaccessible region as a alding out place many times R D westwood as a sheriff and special officer led posses into the desert hills on the trail of outlaws and many times the long arm of the law was asserted as a result of the courage of this man and others of his type about the year 1900 when sheriff jack tyler of grand county and deputy jenkens of uintah county were murdered in the book mountains by a gang of outlaws mr westwood led a posse after the murderers he was appointed sheriff to fall out eylers tylers term he also served as deputy sheriff many years after that and in 1924 was appointed sheriff to succeed sheriff heber murphy resigned serving until the first of the year 1927 he then became deputy sheriff and marshal of moab which position he held at the time of his death dick westwood as he was known to thousands of friends throughout eastern utah was a man of many splendid characteristics he was generous to a fault his life was an open book devoted to the service of his country ustate county and his fellow man his name will go down in the history of grand county as one of its most valuable pioneer citizens he died as he would have chosen to die in the service of the public the sympathy of the people of grand county goes out to the bereaved wife and
