Show GIRL TELIS OF TRIP TO NATIONS CAPITAL A visit to the nations capital where fhe was received by president hoover Is interestingly described by mrs I 1 J kaar formerly miss hazel loveridge ol 01 moab in a letter received this week by her father john T loveridge mrs kaar Is a resident of schenectady new york where her husband Is a prominent radio engineer mr loveridge has kindly consented to permit the publication of excerpts from the letter which will be read with interest by mrs kaars many friends of moab parts of the letter follow the past week has been a most interesting te one and try and tell you something of my trip to washington you see ike had to go down to represent the radio department at a radio engineers institute and as he knew he be very busy thought it was a very good time to take me along of course I 1 was delighted we drove down and the scenery was beautiful we drove for miles right along the hudson river then we crossed the river and were soon in the state of new jersey we stayed all night at newark N J I 1 had always thought of newark as a small city but it has five times the population of salt lake city so it so small the next morning we left early and just seemed to pass from one city right into the next I 1 coulden couldn t tell hardly when one left oft and the next began new jersey is much more level than new york state and just as green as it can be everywhere grass ferns wild flowers and trees seem to be growing by noon we were in philadelphia and such a large city it is it took us an hour and a halt just to get through the business part of the city we stopped there for dinner and then about three 0 clock we arrived in baltimore maryland and spent a little time there the city Is right on the chesapeake bay it Is only 30 miles from there to washington my but it was hot down there I 1 just about melted there was a committee of washington women who met the wives of the engineers who had come to the institute and they took us all around in their private cars at noon of the second day we were down there president hoover received all the engineers and their wives well diddy I 1 was so thrilled I 1 hardly knew what to do As you enter into his office the secret service men are standing at the door and they watch you very closely president hoover Is simply wonderful everyone thought so he Is quite a bit taller than I 1 imagined and not so tat he Is a little gray at the temples and has a most charming smile when I 1 took hold of his hand he said 1 I m so glad to know you gee I 1 could hardly move on daddy to think of me standing right there in the office of the president of the united states shaking his hand well from there we ladles went out to the park wardman hotel this Is where most of the senators and ambassadors bass adors live and here the ladles of washington entertained us with a most delightful luncheon in the afternoon we drove to mt vemon and we went all through washington s old home it is almost uka a small hotel it Is so large and daddy I 1 noticed in the kitchen some buckets just like the one you use for a milk bucket mt vernon Is really large estate on the potomac river the house Is sort of up on a little hill and the view of the river and surrounding country Is most beautiful the gardens are laid out and kept up just as when washington lived there they are filled with old fashioned flowers and look lovely 1 I went through the capitol and listened in at the senate and house of representatives tor a while also the supreme court we went up on monument it Is just a straight pillar feet high you get a marvelous view of the city from the top but you get an awful sensation as the elevator drops so suddenly to the ground mrs hoover was giving a tea tor all the ladles the day we had to leave I 1 certainly wanted to stay but dee thought he should get back anyway I 1 am quite lucky to have been asked to a tea given by the first lady of the land don t you think |
