Show COLTON TELLS ABOUT GRAZING bill congressman don B colton discussed his grazing bill with the uintah tan sheep men recently according to the vernal express during the course of the evening mr colton said 1 I am glad to report that there Is widespread interest throughout the state with reference to the question of regulated grazing on the public domain in every instance where the question has been correctly stated to the stock growers they have unanimously indorsed endorsed Indor sed the principle of regulation and in most instances have unanimously indorsed endorsed Indor sed the provisions of H R there has been those who have questioned the wisdom of section three of the bill relative to preference of grazing permits being issued to homesteaders or other actual residents within the district or in the immediate vicinity thereof but on second thought I 1 am convinced that preference should be given to homesteaders ste aders and other actual residents resident within the district or in the immediate vicinity thereof and to those already occupants of the range who own improved miD roved ranches or ho have provided water tor for liveston c grazed upon the public land I 1 am also convinced that opportunity should be afforded to organizations of actual residents in groups it necessary it if they so desire this provision la is necessary to take care of the domestic stock of small towns and villages there are those who have large lame holdings of land and who thereby control all of the water in a given area who are opposed to the bill I 1 am convinced however that their objection arises because of selfish motives there is no reason why companies who by reason of their ownership of areas bordering on streams or springs control thousands of acres of public domain should not pay a fee commensurate with the benefit derived from the use of public property the growing attendance of our schools requires that revenue should be derived from some source and it Is only fair that a large part of the revenue derived from the use of our public domain should be used for the benefit of our schools the testimony of stockmen stoc kmen all 0 over ver the west as well as the reports of experts who have made careful study ot of the question show that our gm grazing zing upon our public domain Is being ruined because ot of a lack ot of regulation ahe I 1 he livestock industry means so much to the state and to the entire west that we cannot continue the ruining of our lands without suffering great injuries to one of our leading industries it Is surprising how rapidly tho the sentiment has grown for federal supervision er of grazing on the public lands when my bill was first introduced five years ago there were only two or three states that gave give support to the measure now practically every state in the union with the exception of two or three are very lymp thealo to the measure I 1 am sure thab within one year we shall have the bill providing for right government regulation and I 1 am sure that it will be the purpose of the law and of the de pirt ment that administers it to pro vide for the greatest good for tho the greatest number poW possible ble |
