M Waldron Sacr Sacramento Cal 1 tramp t Frank Grover Spokane Wash tramp i Six She were killed and five injured at 1 35 o'clock this morning when westbound westbound west west- bound Denver 8 Rio Grande tra train n No 15 crashed through a defective switch at Colton just east of Soldier Summit into a freight train which was standing stand ing ona on on a siding while the crew was resting The train was due to arrive in Salt Lake Lako at 1025 o o'clock clock last night but was many hours late It is believed that the engineer was was going at a fast rate of speed to make up some of the lost ti time e before reaching the heavy grade of Soldier Summit when the accident accident ac ac- occurred Engineer A. Robinson Dr F. F W. W Taylor and J. J W W. Anderson of ot Provo a wrecking crew and officials o of the railroad railroad railroad rail rail- road were on the train The special I returned le- le turned hei here e at 11 o'clock this morning carrying the bodies of ot Engineer Campbell Campbell Campbell Camp Camp- bell and Fireman Schaeffer Both bodies were taken to Ogden Tho The five Injured and the bodies of the four dead tramps were left at Provo Officials of the Denver Rio Grande here stated late this afternoon that they have been unable to ascertain what caused the engine of oft train rain No 15 to plunge into the freight train on the tho siding but the most probable conjecture conjecture conjecture I ture Is that the switch was defective The crew of the freight train had left Iett the engine and cars on the siding while they rested for tor the night An n official investigation will be conducted con con- ducted dueled by the officials of or the railroad to learn whether or not the crew closed the switch after entering the siding Train No 15 is run for express purposes purposes purposes pur pur- poses only and carries no Pullmans It t had two day coaches but neither one overturned when the crash came The mail car an and th the baggage car both overturned Before reaching Soldier Summit a helping engine connected with the engine engine engine en en- gine pulling the express train It was under the control of ot Engineer Frank Ladd The helper passed over the switch all aU right but the second en engine engine engine en- en gine went through and into the siding Arthur L. H Babcock escaped with slight Injuries Although both boUL were trapped Inside the mail and baggage cars when they turned over neither was crushed and their only injuries are bruises and scratches from being hurled against the sides of the cars Engineer Campbell was badly man man- Bled He was caught beneath the wreck His body was not taken out until much of ot the wreckage had been cleared away Fireman Schaeffer was also badly mangled but was aliVe when removed from beneath the wreck His legs were both mangled and his body crushed He lived only a short time The seven tramps were asleep on the freight engine The four killed are aro believed to have been In the cab while the three injured said they were asleep on the tender Cochran one of ot tho the tramps killed had a bank book on him on an Anida Iowa bank He was fairly well dressed jessed Two of tho the other tramps killed had cards of identification in jn their clothing but the fourth one had nothing on him with which officials could learn who he was or where he came from The injured were taken to the Provo General hospital None of them was seriously Injured and it is believed allwill all allwill allwill will recover Conductor George King was in charge of ot train No 15 A A Anew new crew came on at Grand Junction the di division division dl- dl vision point and was to have taken the train through to The freight train was under charge of ot Conductor Conley and Engineer at the time when It was left on the siding The engine was supposed to have llave been under the care of or an engine watchman until the crew had rested but officials of ot the railroad company were unable this thia afternoon to learn whether he w was on the engine at the time of ot the accident or not lIe He was not found among the dead and is not believed to have been killed They did not know the name of the watchman watch watch- man t |
