Show Upper y Zion Has Greatest Thrill Declares Party New New- Wonders Are Revealed to Visitors Who Marvel at Brilliance of Region CEDAR CITY Aug 24 The The party of thirteen men inca men which left here at noon Wednesday returned to Cedar City after a a thrilling two days' days trip In the chasm of upper Zion canyon Going to Dry valley by automobile automobile automobile automo automo- bile passing Cedar Breaks to the north and Navajo lake to the south the cars were halted at the the- brink of the north fork of Zion canyon a half mile from North Fork cave The party was met here by a wagon from Smiths Smith's sheep herd which hauled the supplies to within with with- in a short distance of the entrance to th the gorge at Old Neds Ned's ranch fifteen miles mlles down the canyon where camp was made mode the first night Taking to their packs packs packs' the next morning the men entered the gulch at a a. a m. m between red sandstone sandstone sandstone sand sand- stone ledges but a few feet high Here the stream In the canyon quickened Its pace and soon became became be came the muddy branch of the Virgin From the first the company was forced to cross and anti the stream as It ran from side to side sid of the narrowing canyon the walls of which closed In until the stream often filled th the whole bottom bottom bottom bot bot- tom forcing travel down the the- stream bed It was not long before the walls of the gorge began mounting hundreds of feet upward The zigzag course of the canyon leads in a southerly direction bearing bearing bearing bear bear- ing slightly to t the e west Never could one see more than a few hundred hundred hundred hun hun- dred feet ahead and and often overhanging overhanging overhanging over over- hanging walls completely obscured th the sky Above the junction the Crystal fork the chasm throughout is but a score of feet wide seldom more often less with walls mounting to a height varyIng varying varying vary vary- ing from one to two thousand feet From Crystal fork there flows a n. clear stream of water about equal In size to the stream in North fork From this point down the canyon widens slightly and the walls continue continue con con- to mount upward Side canyons coming In proved to be one of the features of the gorge These canyons usually ended end end- ed In blind walls where at times In the year high waterfalls are common Orderville gulch and Oak Valley gorge are the largest of these extending far back into the mountains the latter of which has never been een explored Into this the party went only a short distance The most notable discovery of the trip was was was' the comparative ease with which the course can at present present present pres pres- ent be traveled Excepting for log logjams logjams logjams jams which might easily be dispensed dispensed dis- dis with the Journey could be made on horseback The party camped the second night at the entrance to Oak Valley gorge traveling the tho remainder of the distance the next day leaving the narrows of the canyon at 5 o'clock on Friday The distance from the upper entrance to the gorge to the meeting of the foot trail trait at the narrows Is Is' perhaps twenty miles Those making the trip declare that upper canyon holds thrills for the tourist not dream dreamed d dof dof of by the most enthusiastic narrator narrator narrator narra narra- tor tor of southern Utah wonders It ItIs Itis Itis is a country filled with a never- never ending wealth of scenic marvels The party returned headed by Arthur Fife Captain Captai W.
