H Crocker Republican national committeeman from Califor Califor- nia Pleads for Harmony Between Between addresses Hughes conferred conferred conferred con con- with Republican and Progressive Progressive Progress- Progress ive lye ive leaders here in the interest of party harmony The nominee confined confined con con- fined LIned his suggestions to a plea for operation co-operation among Republicans and Progressives In so Hughes doing said that he did not propose to interfere in the states state's local affairs but that he wanted all elements of both these parties to work together in the inter- inter A c st of the national ticket Among the leaders who conferred with the nominee today were Chester H Rowell of the Republican national campaign committee who Joined the Hughes party yesterday on its way from Portland to this city Francis V. V Kessling chairman of the Republican state central committee and William H. H Crocker national committeeman Kessling anc and Crocker met the Hughes train today before it reached San Francisco and conferred with the nominee en route In his address before the Union League club Hughes spoke chiefly of the protective tariff reiterating his contentions that it was necessary for American industries and that its enactment and enforcement should be entrusted to the Republican party patty Gives Suffrage Position In addressing the woman voters Mr Th Hughes repeated hI his conviction that the suffrage issue should be speedily decided and the vote granted by women throughout the country by amendment i to the federal constitution He reiterated reiterated reiter reiter- his reasons for wishing this done assailed the administration for lor or waste and extravagance and declared that under proper leadership it would be possible for America to achieve all its ideals There is not one of our ideals that thatis is incapable of achievement Mr Hughes said We can have contentment contentment content content- ment meat we can have hav peace we can have security provided we have an unswerving unswerving ing lag loyalty to the flag an intelligent operation co-operation and those wise policies which will foster our Industries and protect our enterprises and provided further that while we correct abuses we make sure to open the avenues for honorable American achievement throughout the world The Republican party reunited and reconstructed in this campaign stands for those ideals and the methods of their attainment and as a great libera libera With local differences I have no concern The great national aims alms I 1 have in view transcend all possible local differences and we are together reunited Inspired by the loftiest traditions of our his his- tori party and devoted to the accomplishments accomplishments accomplishments of those great achievements upon which must rest our enduring prosperity as a nation Speaking of preparedness Mr Hughes said I 1 desire that we take should no narrow narrow narrow nar nar- row view We live In a very critical period There is a new world In process of formation Out of the great European European European Euro Euro- conflict will issue a new Europe but there must be In a very true tru-e sense a new America to meet the exigencies o of that time It must be an America I that has found itself it must be an anI I America that takes a long look ahead i not not content with the prospect of a few years even of a decade or a score I of years but an America planning for forthe forthe forthe the twentieth century We Ve must conserve the very bases baRes of our prosperity in conserving women and children We must endeavor to have a contented America an AmerIcan American Amerlean Amer Amer- ican declamation but in efficiency of governments When I read of the hundreds of ol millions appropriated for military and naval purposes I am not satisfied I want to know how that money Is spent I want to know whether we get in po potency potency po- po tency what we are paying for The nominee assailed the tho administration tion for Its diplomatic appointments I deplore the extent to which men ol ot
