Show Arena Ring Prelim Bout Steals Show Although booked as a preliminary prelimi-nary bout, tha six-round battle between Dave Manzanares and Eddie Rosa "stole the show" In no uncertain manner Monday evening eve-ning at McCullough's arena. He flearad Rose tor a count of nine In the sixth beat, after several sev-eral exciting melees In which both scrappers tossed ' blows freely. Toe-to-toe slugging and fierce mixups at the ropes kept tha fight at fever pitch throughout, and Manzanares was punching Ross with deadly effect as tha final bell sounded. Ross was definitely beaten for the first time in several weeks at the local arena. He had his chance for a kayo in the fourth when he floored Dave with a hard right, but the Coloradoan bounced right up, and, although badly dazed, hung on until the round ended. Manzanares made a quick recovery, re-covery, though, and in the last two heats gave Ross a terrific beating. - Data Markhmin whipped Yuuiig Jackie Burke In the four-round opener, which waa the next beet beat. Tha two flyweighta nut an-a an-a fine buttle. Markham did especially espe-cially welL Ha would duek under Burke's punches and throw a right. His favorito trick though, waa to cover up, weave in and then connect with a right to Burke's Jaw-Johnny Jaw-Johnny Candia and Roy Hart fought to a fast draw. Hart took some rights on the jaw Just to get In there and connect with a few left hooks. Tiger Griffin drew with Eloy Chavez, and Dick Diamond, after flailing wildly about the ring, won a six-round decision from Al Allard. Pat O'Kelly, young heavyweight, who was to make his Salt Lake City debut Monday, did not fight when his slated opponent, u. Whaley of Bingham failed to appear. Jackie Burke of Ogden retained his claims to the lnterrhountaln middleweight laurels with a technical tech-nical knockout over R. J. Lewis of Denver in seven rounds of a scheduled sched-uled 10-round main event Lewis was unable to continue after a five-minute rest given him as the result of a low blow. Heated arguments ensued when Lewis' handlers claimed Burke fouled repeatedly after the Denver fighter, floored Jackie with a right to the Jaw in the first canto. Burke and his seconds denied the accusation, accusa-tion, and the arguments which followed fol-lowed marred an otherwise fine card. |
