Show Merry-Co-Round By DREW PEARSON and ROBERT 8. ALLEN NEW YORK Senator Royal S. Copeland, bitter Roosevelt critic, will not win the Demo crstic nomination for mayor of New York, and his chances of capturing the Republican designation desig-nation are not much better. Thia Is th outstanding development In the New York political scrip a battle which, although al-though only for th nomination of city tickets, actually Js the most important balloting in America since laat November. Because of Its importance, big ahot politico from both parties are applying the microscope, and here are some of the facts they hav deduced: 1. Lambasting tha new deal does not yet win votes at least not in New York. Senator Cope-land, Cope-land, a Democrat, haa been as rabid against the new deal as any Republican ever tnought of being. But he has been steadily backsliding. 2. Thia ia Tammany's last stand. If defeated next November, the wigwam might just as well close its flaps. 3. If Mayor LaGuardia emerges victorious from both primary and election, as now seems Erobable, he will be strong presidential timber I 140. 4. The day when Republicans and Democrats can successfully combine on an anti-Roosevelt ticket still is in the future. All sorts of overtures over-tures were made to get a big league Republican to root for Copeland (National Committeeman Charley Hillee, ex-Congresswoman Ruth Pratt, and ex-Secretary of the Treasury Ogdcn Mills all were approached), without result. Only the voice of Al Smith, anti-Roosevelt Democrat, waa heard crying in the wilderness. Soft Pedaling The whole atratrgy of Doctor Copeland at first was to make Roosevelt his whipping boy. He sprsyed anti-new deal vitriol all over Manhattan. Man-hattan. But It proved dismal flop, and It played squarely into the handa of Mayor Fiorello (Little Flower) LaGuardia and Judge Jeremiah Mahoney, the anti-Tammany hall candidate. In fact, the reaction against Copelsnd was so serious that during the closing days of the campaign, cam-paign, hia maeter-mlnde had him dilute the new deal attack to milk and water. His previous roars of outraged indignation turned to a meek whisper that the new deal had nothing to do with the case. F. D. R. For Fiorello It Is an open secret that Roosevelt is for the Little Flower. They long have been close friends, and LaGuardia has backed Roosevelt on almost every new deal issue. Secretly the president -hopes he will win, not only in the present pri-msries, pri-msries, but in the November election. However, he will not intervene to aid Fiorello. Senator Copeland has opposed almost every recent move mad by th Roosevelt administration. administra-tion. Ha waa bitter against the supreme court bill, and openly fraternized with Justice Mc Reynolds, Rey-nolds, staunchest die-hard on the court and the man who refused to stand in tribute to Roosevelt Roose-velt st two Gridiron club dinners. Historical note: Hard-hitting Ferdinand Pecora, now New York supreme court judge, i wanted to run against" Copelsnd in the 1934 Democratic primaries. Much lime-lighted as a result of his senste bsnking lnvestigstion, Pecora had the job cinched. Ail he needed was little new deal support. But Farley and Roosevelt celled him off. wouldn't let him run. Thst wsg th sole reason Copeland slid back into office. Tammany Death e Not many people realize how lean have been the pickings for Tammany during the new deal. Roosevelt, anxious to break up the wigwam, has sent little patronage its wsy. And patronage is whst Tammany lives on patronage plus the fees turned Into the wigwam. For instance, there were widespread rumors bout the time Judge Crater mysteriously disappeared dis-appeared that the cost of getting a job as judge on the supreme court of New York required a contribution to Tsmmsny. Ususl amount $75,000 the salary of the judge for three years. Tsmmsny money is used to buy Thanksgiving turkeys for forgotten men and to pay rent when the landlord is too insistent. But with no money in the Tammany war chest,, and with no jobs to dispense, many New York district leaders have become discouraged, would rather close up headquarters than have to face th constantly demsnding peopl of their district and be unable to take care of them. Sardine Bathtub Believe It or not, but sardines up at Passama-quoddy Passama-quoddy Bar. Maine, are being salted in whit enamel bathtub. What happened waa that th bathtuba were ordered for W P A workers when the tide-harnessing tide-harnessing project was in full blast Now they hav been turned over to sardine-packing plants.
