QUENTIN, Oct 9. Tha Germane now have applied tha torch to tha beautiful town of Bo hair), in tha general direction of which tha American are driving from Premont The German in front of the British and American today were surrendering "freely," according to report By United Press. The allied armies are battering away on two fronts which total more than 110 miles. The comhined attack of. British, French and Americans from north oL Cambria to south of St, Quen-tin Quen-tin is over a frontage of thirty miles. The Franco-American drive from northwest of Rheims to north of Verdun stretches out eighty miles. , A sector of about fifty-five miles separates these two active fronts. A great portion of this "quiet sector" is now the scene of a terrific artillery duel. The two great attacks are being made on the sides of a huge salient, at the apex of which is the strong St. Gobain massif, and the important city of Laon. In the Cambrai-SL Cambrai-SL Quentin operation the allies are striking directly eastward, gnawing gnaw-ing into the base of this enormous triangle and rendering it more untenable. They are almost upon Bohain and are approaching the German base cities of Le Gateau and VVashigny. Cambrai itself has been occupied. , The bigger operation, with its myriad of strategic objectives, also is menacing-the German hold on the St. Gobain and Laon region. In this, the French and Americans are attacking between Berry-au-Bac, on the Aisnc, and Beaumont, directly north of Verdun. Ver-dun. New advances were reported all along the right wing of this attack today and the Germans were expected to fall back in the Argonne forest at least to Grandpre. . The artillery fighting northwest of Rheims may presage a new attack by General Mangin which would wipe out the minor salient below Laon. ' GENERAL RETREAT CONSIDERED LIKELY. . By United Press.
