From furf. Indlcatlor.a it arrears the only ohjeLi.'.m to be urged against Smoot will be that he Is an o.Tielal of the Mormon church. That is not likely to prove Eufhcient ground to debar him from the fcnat, and it 13 not considered consid-ered rrobabli that the purely Eenti-mental Eenti-mental rrotoets of Gentiles can be made to count apalnst his certificate of election by the iState ' Leeri.lature. It will be noted that Mr. Smoot's case would differ from the case, of Representative Repre-sentative lioberts, who was charg-ed with belnjr a polytramtst. No such charge has been maae against Smoot. . Republican Kenators are interested in the prospective election of Mr. Fmoot from the fact that they know the Democrats Dem-ocrats will charge that he was seated to carry out a 'barsraln"'. which the Democrats all know the Republican national na-tional committee mads in 1300 with the leaders of the Mormon church, namely, that the Mormon vote, being the balance bal-ance of power in Utah, Colorado, Idaho, Nevada and Wyoming:, should be cast for the Republican party in return for the policy of "hands off by Republicans Republi-cans toward the Mormon propaganda. The Republican Senators realize that Circumstantial evidence seems to be against them. , The Republican party has made sweeping: grains In Idahoy Utah and Colorado which, the Demot crats will claim, are due to the Mor mon vote. If a Mormon Senator should be seated in the face of overwhelming: public opposition, the Democrats will claim that the Republicans are delivering: deliv-ering: their share of the goods, although he may be seated because it would be illegal to keep him out The Democrats Demo-crats say that it was a realization of this condition which caused President Roosevelt to take the Course of voicing an opinion about the election of a Senator Sen-ator by a sovereign State. , . r -' f ' WHAT IS BEST FOB UTAHf Logan (Utah) Nation. . The case of the candidacy of Hon. Reed Smoot for a United States Sen-atorship Sen-atorship has reached an acute stage. Even the influence of the august ruler of this great land has been Invoked to discourage his election. Many religious . organizations are taking action along the same lines, and the country Is more or; less agog over the affair. There is not one' good reason why Mr, Smoot should be considered Ineligible for the Senatorshio. He is an intelligent and law-abiding ckizen. well worthy or aay political honorB that may " be placed Upon hlnr. It is not charged that he is guilty of ahy wrong action. It is not claimed that he lacks ability." It Is not alleged that he Is. a law-breaker. His only offense is than he Is a Mormon apostle. Nevertheless, much opposition exists to his candidacy. It Is claimed that some of his fellow apostles are polygamists.' and that he himself is bound by solemn obligations to consider the church In preference to the State. These are the two main points against him, and great stress is being Uld upon them In many quarters. v S2SOOT OT A CZAXL .' Provo (Utah) Democrat Reed Smoot is not the czar of ProvO and the people do hot fear him. We are not subsidized nor would Apostle Smoot have us so. He meets as strong opposition opposi-tion in a political way as any other man In Provo, and no man In Provo fears to oppose him politically on the street corner cor-ner or on the stump, and he is not above arguing the point with any of the boys. He is plain Reed Smoot In politics and business, and we Provo folk go after him as such. We dehy, most emphattcallyt the minlstersT insinuation insin-uation of subsidisation. The 'Democrat Is opposed to Reeil Smoot as Senator because he is a Republican. We would keep all Republicans out of Congress if we could. We fought against the Republicans Re-publicans at, the proper time; but we are not now fighting Reed Smoot the man. The people of Utah have said they want htm for Senator, and the people wiU not permit a little nest of carpet-bag politicians and befuddled ministers to thwart their purposes. |
