It developed yesterday that Sheriff James Davis, who for the past two years has held the .office .of-fice of Sheriff of Bingham' county, has absconded, taking with him some $4000 or'JSOOO of the county funds. "The announcement an-nouncement created quite a sensation, as Davis was regarded as one of the squarest "and most substantial men in the county and many of his friends refuse re-fuse to believe him a defaulter. An examination of his accounts disclosed dis-closed a shortage of about OOADavts, 0 Besides the general merchandise busl- taess at Swan Valley, with a stock valued val-ued at $5000, Davis owns a ranch -and other property) all of which ia slightly incumbered, but. upon which, with his excellent reputation he. could have easily eas-ily raised the amount of his shortage. As he is a man of abstemious, habits and does not gamble his friends believe bis flight is due to mental .derangement. |
