Up to 9 o'clock this morning no news of the overdue American liner St Louis had been received re-ceived Vice-President Wright of the American line . later said: "We have nothing to add to the statement state-ment given out last night except that up to the present time we are absolutely without word of the St Louis." Clement A. Griscon of the American line said today: "It has been said that the St Louis has leaky boilers. I do not know that she has. There are thousands of small tubes on which the flames play to heat the . water. If, as sometimes "happens, some of these tubes leak enough to damp the fire, it is necessary to plug them up. 'This does not mean that there is serious damage, but It does mean that you have less surface to heat the water and so less steam. I do not think the St Louis is in trouble, but that she is not making very fast time." At the American line's office here the home addresses of most of the important import-ant officers connected with the St Louis were made public today. No comment was made on the giving out of the list. |
