The first interstate university de-bate de-bate between the University of Idaho and the University of Utah wars held In Barratt hall of the L. D. S. unlver-slty unlver-slty last night and resulted in a victory for the Utah speakers. . . The subject debated was "Resolved, That United States Senators should be ' elected by popular rote." The afflrfaiatlTe was taken by Utah, represented toy Oscar W. Carlson, and David P. Howells. Idaho's representatives representa-tives were 3. I Adklson and William E. Lee. . State Senator E. M. Allison presided ! over the meeting and introduced the speakers. The arguments, which covered cov-ered a period of over two hours, were closely followed by the audience. -Howells, in the Affirmative, referred i to local conditions in support . of his contention. Referring to bribery he said that brobery was not confined to giving money for votes. If a candidate were td say to a man: "'.I will give yoa a Judicial position In Egypt or a chap lainshlp in the United States army.' it would be bribery as friueir as though he said,- 'I will give you $20,000 for your Tote.'-- ---- - As' a rnle, the debaters eliminated personalities from their argdments, and a stuek closely to general -arguments. "V The affirmative speakers maintained A that some change was necessary to tr Toid deadlocks and other etlls. The V negative speakers said , certain evi s should be done awav with, but no radl-" radl-" cal changes should he made. v At the close ot the debate the Judges: President I. H. Paul, MaJ. R. W. Young, and Capt W. C. Shoup, ren-- ren-- flered their aeclslori, giving two rtrtes to Utah and one to Idaho. After the decision the students held a carnival of high Jinks to celebrate the victory of the home speakers. The Seeond debate will he held next year.- , |
