Rld-dell. a member of the grand Jury which is bearing Henry Toutsey" evidence as to the alleged Goebel murder con- splracy, appeared before .Circuit Judge Cantrell yesterday, and told of an effort ef-fort made to get him . to divulge -the secrets of the Jury room. A Strang-, er, "believed here to 'be aCtncinnatl newspaper man, representing himself to be a detective from Indianapolis, ap- , peared at Rlddell's home In the country last night and offered him (400 for the story in full. On the remosal of Rid-, dell to tell the story, the stranger gave him If for his sapper, and left. Riddell paid the money into court and furnished a description of the man. Juror Rlgdell stated ' that on Jils re- j turn home Thursday a man of medium height, with black hair, well dressed and of good address, was at his home. Juror Riddell continued: "The man gave me his name as McDowell, and said his home' was at Indianapolis, Ind. That he knew W. 8. Taylor, that i he knew Riddell was a member of the I jury which had the investigation of Henry E. Youtsey. that since the beginning be-ginning of this case, and the testimony of Youtsey, Taylor was much worried and had grown thin and emaciated; that he (McDowell) knew who all the members of the Jury-were, had a dia. gram of their houses and knew where they lived. He said he wanted to talk privately with me, and said that he wanted Information about the testimony testi-mony about Youtsey, and could get money for It, and that he would divide with me, . V'He called me outside of-the house and stated that if there was enough evidence against Taylor to convict him (Taylor) that he,, with others, would kidnap Taylor and bring him here and divide the reward with me. He then offered me money which he had in his hand, and . I "refused it; then he shoved some money in my vest pocket and told me to buy me a hat with it; that he saw there was no opportunity to get the information. He said be was stopping, at the Capitol hotel,' and had driven to my house." The Judge Instructed that the money be turned over to the trustee . of the Jury fund, which was done, and that the ' grand Jury investigate the matter. |
