Show LEGISLATURE MAY AMEND AMUAGELAWS OF UTAH Bill Will Be Aimed at Persons Who Apply for Marriage Mar-riage Licenses Before Ink Is Dry on Decree. Shcfuld a time limit be prescribed by law within which divorced persons may . ' remarry? ' .;-- - - ' This is a question which will probably prob-ably cause a discussion of more than " . ordinary Interest when brought before the present session of the Legislature. It is the opinion of a number of the . members that the divorce laws of Utah are too lax in several respects and It seems probable r that . bills intended to narrow the grounds upon which legal separation may be secured will be Introduced. In-troduced. ' " . A billl to fix a time limit within which divorced persons may remarry would, it is declared by those who favor such legislation, prevent the very frequent fre-quent occurrence of persons who have obtained a divorce stepping fronv the courtroom where the decree is -signed to the Clerk's office for a marriage license and remarrying before the ink becomes fftty on the documents that freed them - - jf from unpleasant matrimonii ties. 7 "Such instances are .by no means1 rare," said a former official of the courts today. "From my observation while In official life I feel -'safe in saying say-ing that at least 10 per cent of those who secure divorces remarry lmme-daitely lmme-daitely thereafter."'' Senator O. C Whitmore of the Eighth district this morning expressed himself as strongly in favor of some legislation that would tend to remedy this condition condi-tion of affairs. "It seems to me," said he, "that there are more divorces than marriages, at least it is safe to say that divorces are becoming more and more numerous every year. If those who sought separation separ-ation were compelled to wait a year before be-fore remarrying there would be more mutual forbearance as well as less haste in assuming matrimonial responsibilities. respon-sibilities. At present there are too many legal causes for divorce, so many in fact that a separation is often obtained ob-tained by mutual consent, where there is no just cause for a decree. I believe that more stringent divorce laws would tend to improve public morals." |
