Show RETREATED UNDER FIRE Strike Rioters Driven Back After an Attack on tlifc Mine Guards. 1 THURMOND, W. Va., May 27.-The first serious outbreak since the late strike order waa issued occurred last night at the Big Q minea on Laurel Creek. For several days the strikers have been making ma-king an effort to induce the non-union men to Join their ranks. Last evening the strikers began marching march-ing in a body toward the mines. The guards on duty, half a dosen In number, at sight of th marching body, opened Are. The strikers quickly returned the fire, but ss they were yet at long range, the shooting was not effective and only one person, Marshal Brown, a guard, was killed. Several received minor Injuries. In-juries. More than 100 shots were fired , before the strikers retreated. More trouble Is anticipated today. |
