It was rumored at 2 o'clock that indictments in-dictments charging polygamy had been returned by the grand jury, and that the arrests were being made. The grand Jury, which is now neartng the end of its work, has made far-reach-' ing investigation of the charges against v alleged polygamlsts. It has not confined the probing to the Tanner case alone, but has taken up charges against other " Salt Lakers and persons residing in other towns in Salt Lake county. Charges against Joseph A. Sliver and -N, V. Jones ot Salt Lake have been investigated in-vestigated as well as the alleged polygamy polyg-amy of Bishop Heber Bennlon of Tay-Iorsville. Tay-Iorsville. . . Ebenezer Fares, who is the father of the woman alleged to be Silver's plural wife, was before the grand Jury an hour yesterday afternoon, and his wife was called yesterday and recalled this morning. morn-ing. Parley "Williams Testifies. - Parley L. Williams, the Oregon Short Line's . general attorney, was the first witness at this morning's session. He was detained . about thirty minutes. When he emerged he left the ante-room hurriedly. Mr. Williams is supposed to have testified concerning the alleged polygamy po-lygamy of Judge Tanner. Mrs. Josephine Fames, wife of Ebenezer Ebene-zer Fames, was the next witness called. Mrs. Fames lives at 47 Pear street. She was only questioned about twenty minutes. min-utes. Another Tanner Witness. W. H. Rowe, president of the- Jtow"e -Morris-Sommerhays wool firm, was then railed, and was questioned but a short time. Mr. Rowe said that he was called ' with reference to the Tanner case, but , that he' did not know anything about It beyond what he had read in the papers. A number of questions were asked him, but none he could answer beyond hear- say. Victoria Alley Inquiry. Former Chief of Police Arthur Pratt. Assistant , County Attorney Dana T. " Smith and Assistant City Attorney Russell Rus-sell G. Schulder were also before the Jury. The appearance of theie three witnesses is supposed to be in regard to I the cleansing of Victoria alley and Com- ' mercial street. It has been rumored for some time that the Jury Intended making ma-king an "investigation of these places. Attorney Smith . was questioned for about fifteen miovtes, but It is believed that his testimony was not very weighty. A rumor is in circulation that these last three witnesses are a committee com-mittee appointed by the Juryto look closely Into alleged crime on these streets, and that their first report was made today. If the investigations of the jury in this direction are successful a decided change is promised in these localities. The evidence relating to the Tanner case is supposed to be nearly all In, and the Jury's report may be expected within a few days. - , .. |
