George Baker, who deserted from the United States army at Fort Snelllng, Minn.; in July,. 1903, has surrendered, himself to the officers of-ficers at Fort Waynei Petrolt.' It 13 paid that by a slight miscaiculation Baker, faces conviction and a sentence for desertion. He was under the impression im-pression that his surrender would ce followed Immediately by a perfufctory. trial and his discharge, basin his expectations ex-pectations of leniency upon a Jaw that when twp years have passed' after the ! expiration of-a deserter's enlistment, if he has been living in the United States under his own name, ,no sentence "will p9 imposed. . - . . - Baker made the, mistake f thinking that the two years dated from the time of his desertion Instead of from the expiration ex-piration of his enlistment. 'The two years from the expiration of his enlistment enlist-ment will not be up for another month." He surrendered a month, too soon to benefit by the law vpon which he depended de-pended for his Jmmedlate release. |
