Show OICE JOICE OF THE PEOPLE By Telegram Readers Sales Tax Repeal Urged To Insure Fairness Editor Telegram Now that our legislators have determined that neither the governor nor northe northe northe the commissioners entrusted to the handling andling- of the welfare problem have the answers and have entirely ignored their recommendations recommendations rec rec- rec- rec it would seem time for a campaign to do away with the sales tax The sales tax was inaugurated primarily for the purpose e of taking taking taking tak tak- ing care of the needy It has not accomplished its ifs purpose se primarily because of legislators' legislators attitude from sections of the state where the welfare problem problem problem lem d does s not exist as a prime factor Coming from these sections sections sec eec and not having the whole states state's welfare at heart they have set up a a. barrier against the successful operation of the sales tax as a relief measure Because it appears they are intent upon using these funds for purposes that may reduce their own tax burdens rather than support the welfare program program program pro pro- gram in a manner which would do justice to the old folks foUts and indigent there appears nothing left to do except abandon the sales tax and place the burden the general tax roll roU otherwise otherwise other other- wise the city people are just plain t taking it on the chin The farmers save eave taxes on half of their living g expense by raising their own foodstuffs and d pay no tax x on n their eats except for items while the city folks are arc forced to to pay a 2 tax on every item of food they ey purchase Because there appears to be beno beno beno no hope for securing the backing of the farmer representatives in inthe inthe inthe the legislature for a reasonable interpretation of ot the welfare plan based on receipts from the 2 tax lets let's take the 2 tax off and let the farmers share equally the burden of taking care of the needy through a general tax G.
