WILLIAMS A knock on the door brought a soft gentle gentler Come In in and sitting in n a worn wicker rocker chair was wasa a. a a tiny woman woman with a welcome smile It Ii was was' Mrs Lula Greene Richards Richards Richards' Rich Rich- ards ards' one of the fe few remaining pioneers whose brain and touch helped to mold Salt Lake City into what it is today She was more than willing to talk about life iCe in Salt Lake Just a few years after it it was founded by the Mormon pioneers She leaned over to pick u up a magazine Her shiny white hair glistened glisten d in the sunlight su How old am I When was I born she answered Ill be 92 on April 8 I was born in Kanesville Pottawatomie county Iowa April 8 1849 and Im I'm f feeling eling fine she spoke up And she looked fine Crossed Crosse Plains in 52 sz She began to turn the pages of ofa ofa ofa a magazine and started to tell how she crossed the plains in 1852 Her father lather was Evan M. Young a pioneer settler was a grandfather of Persis H He was my great uncle She was wearing what the women wore in the olden days She had on a waist with a high collar that was neatly embroidered a along long full black skirt kirt A white lace apron was on her lap Her shoes were laced black-laced high Although she sees well wel she sees better with my glasses Reached S. L at 3 A number of painted portraits hung on the wall Her son son Artist Lee Greene Richards painted themI them I r arrived here when I was three years old she broke in There wasn't much here then I think the Eagle Gate had been erected Brigham Youngs Young's house was built and there was the Lion house Salt Lake was only 5 years old Some people lived Jived in tents and dugouts she continued as she stroked her kindly slightly wrinkled face Then she waved her hands Indifferent in indifferent indifferent different directions to indicate where certain landmarks stood Most of them are gone now but just the same we have a beautiful e tty she said After the conversation switched to to Mrs Richards' Richards personal life liCe it was learned that she isone of the best loved writers in the L D S church Her poetry and verse will never die She is one of the truly pioneer woman editors She was the first woman editor of The Womans Woman's Exponent B Brigham r rig i g h ham a m Young selected her to edit this first early-day early publication She was educated in the pioneer schools of Utah Utah- and spent her girlhood in Cache valley She She taught taught school and took part in dramatics All AU her life has be been n devoted to literary literary literary lit lit- work Recalls Old Da Days DaysI s 's sI I do remember when I used to sit on Brigham Youngs Young's lap laps she added I remember when Johnston's Johnstons Johnstons Johnston's Johnstons Johnston's John John- ston's army came here We were living Jiving at the Point foint of the Mountain Mountain Mountain Moun Moun- tain near Draper Father taught school there when I was 9 years old I remember when they started construction on the old Salt Lake theater when the Z C M I was opened in 1869 I attended the University of De Deseret eret when Dr Park was president I go to 10 Relief society meeting Sunday school and regular church services services- she boasted We Ve all need some religion I remember the first thing I was was taught to do dois dois dois is pray pra pray Mother of Seven Se SeenI I guess youve you've heard all I can remember today she said Come Comeback Comeback Comeback back some other time and meantime meantime meantime mean mean- time Ill I'll brush up my memory The two companions live at Third avenue Mrs Richards is the mother of seven children three e sons of whom are living Besides the the artist there are are Dr Evan G. G Richards and Heber G.
