Show 0 M M M MH 4 M MM 4 I MM t t M M M H M FEMALE EDUCATION i MM f 0 MM M- M 4 H M 4 M I I MM MM P H- H President Jordan on yesterday delivered a very ery interesting address before the convention of the Federation of Women's Clubs at Los Angeles his lIis theme being the higher education of women Among the views view which this distinguished scholar and pedagogue advanced on the occasion there were two with which we cannot wholly agree In speaking of the kind of training needed by young yo-ung women President dent Jordan agreed that it should be as thorough and advanced of its kind as that given to young men but that as a rule the kind should be different The fhe reason he assigned was that women lack originality originality originality origin origin- are shy of essaying unsolved ed problems while they have excellent memories and are successful in acquiring knowledge which is not dependent upon original investigation Hence flence he concludes that the higher education of the two sexes should be differentiated and follow separate and distinct lines We Ve may grant his premises without adopting his conclusions further than this It should be obvious obvious ob ob- ob- ob that inasmuch as as s. s the average life duty work and the general activities of men and women necessarily necessarily sadly differ differ- the tile desirability of adopting means to ends naturally would suggest somewhat different training in the tile two cases If If it be true as he states doubtless doubtless on the he strength of wide experience ce and close observation on that woman lacks originality and andis andis andis is deficient in the development de' of the motor side of of- her brain in our opinion it does not follow that the condition is normal or 01 permanent A commonplace commonplace commonplace common common- place of science tells us that organs or faculties deteriorate deteriorate deteriorate de de- de- de as a result of non nonuse In all the ages of our modern civilization and for countless ages befOre before be be- f fore re in the whole scheme of human society up to i the middle of the nineteenth century at least there was nothing original for woman to do or which she would have ha been allowed to do Initiative e was was' wholly male and since it it was not called into play in the other s sex x the motor power behind it may h have ye tended to become aborted in the female But it has not become so universally as we know from reading the history of great original and masterful ruling women of the world in many generations ns It is easier and we think more logical an and scientific scientific scientific to ad adopt pt the hypothesis that given the same chance to originality and to take th the initiative ini ml- tiati e with man and the long o obscured faculty in w woman nan quickly i kly le be become m of t that at in inthe inthe inthe the other sex President Jordans Jordan's other view from which we I partly dissent is that there is no reasonable Objection objection objection tion to t the e co education co of the s sexes although he admits tl the e fact that a strong reaction has set in against i it among educators arid and d the thinking pub- pub lie lic We Ve shall not here attempt to discuss the Question Ques fues- fuestion estion es- es tion at large and will only offer the one comment that there is a decided practical objection to the to-the the coeducation coeducation co co- co- co education of o our r youth after chila childhood and e es especially when the students are growing into manhood manhood manhood man man- hood a and d womanhood Upon the strength of it it we we- believe the reaction has come ome It is that the more thore or less intimate relations of the class room oom and college col lege life generally present a temptation to to- that wicked little fellow Cupid to get busy and strenuous strenuous that he cannot he-cannot cannot 01 does or-does does not resist and the consequence consequence consequence con con- sequence too often often- is immature hence inconsiderate ate and hence often unhappy or undesirable mar nar- dages from that important consideration we see nothing to find fault with in co Its intellectual results are as good as those a under the separate separate- system it certainly exerts a civilizing civilizing civilizing and purifying influence over the young males and the boys and girls unquestionably ly like it But as to economic and social value in the light of experience we have our doubts |
