Show PEOPLES PEOPLE'S CORNER 3 I Det Defends ends Paid Workers Of Prohibition Cause Causel Editor of The Telegram I note by your editorial in last 1151 Saturdays Saturdays Saturdays Saturday's Sat Telegram entitled Saving Savin Their Jobs that you would convey the impression that the fight against repeal of prohibition is simply the hysteria of ot panicky paid workers ina ina in ina a lost cause Le to save their jobs This is just typical of the sarcasm and insults in in- suIts that have been heaped upon earnest t workers for prohibition since the time lime that the liquor interests began began began be be- gan their repeal campaign several years ago Such editorials are the result result re re- re- re sult suit either of complete ignorance of the feelings and motives of a lar large e proportion of our people or the product product prod prod- of the paid propaganda of or the wet interests It seems evident to anyone who has studied the liquor business and the antiliquor movement both during national na nOl na- na lional prohibition and before belore that the dry cause has been anything but mercenary while the wets have been spending the mone money through paid workers and every other conceivable channel both open and md underground Records before congress of wet and dry expenditures show that during 1932 one group of ot wets spent some to defeat prohibition while the drys spent less than tenth one-tenth of that amount to defend it Allied with the wets wele have been all those forces who hoped to cash in directly direct direct- ly or indirectly from the sale of booze the the newspapers through liquor advertisements the Du Ponts and ond other millionaires who expect liquor license money to relieve them of heavy income taxes and the brewing and distilling industry which would profit directly Most of the wet agitation has been carried on under the guise of oC increasIng Increasing ing respect for law but the writers writer's recent observations in the beer states around Utah indicate only less respect and further demoralization I Mr Editor we may differ on methods of dealing with alcohol but let us not question the motives of those men and women of high ideals and unselfish purpose who through II the years have fought to curb and banish the curse of liquor By the power of money they may be defeated in this battle but they have not thrown up the sponge and If national na na- na prohibition is la repealed the country will be simply stepping backward backward backward back back- ward 90 years to the conditions prevailing prevailing pre pre- in those days when Abraham Lincoln spoke these words Whether or not the world would be vastly benefited by a total and final banishment from it of all intoxicating eating cating drinks seems to me not novan now nov an open question Three-fourths Three of ot mankind confess the affirmative with their tongues and I believe all the rest acknowledge It In their hearts hearts- and the fight will be carried on by millions of men and women until that total and final banishment is a reality FREDERICK W.
