Show s sIn mU e eIn In Order That the Readers eade of o This Th Paper May Know the Fc Fac History of the Ogden Packing Provision Company Plant The rho Ogden Packing and Provision company was Incorporated in 1901 with a paid paM up capital of We at that time owned no buildings kind and it was not until or oX r real al estate of any 1906 that we built a small packing plant the first t of its kind in the state Our investment wa was more or less hazardous and we were were ere taking bl big bis chances in developing the packing business At that time the hog supply in the intermountain tain country was very small We purchased all the hogs that we could locally and when when we we c could uld not secure h hogs gs locally to operate o our r plant we went to Nebraska for hogs The rate from Nebraska to Utah was 81 cents per hundred pounds We applied to the railroad company for a reduction in rates as the railroad company carried hogs from the same point to Portland Ore almost double the distance for for 85 86 cents But they refused to grant us any concession whatever as they claimed they were making more money out of handling the cured meats from the East into Utah than what th they y would be getting if the hogs were raised locally Our only salvation was to encourage the hog raising throughout the territory tributary to our plant which included Utah and Idaho in particular We did th this s In many cases loaning money to some of the hog raisers It was US very slow Elow work to interest anyone In raising hogs aa as they felt It could be done cheaper in the East and that because of the lack Jack of ot corn om in this country It was not adapted to hog raising But Butas Butas as es the hog raisers gradually found a steady y market whenever they had any hogs ready and found it remunerative to raise hogs they gradually grad grad- nally worked into It more and more so th that lt our lat latest st government statistics show a hog S supply of hogs in Utah and Idaho on January 1 DIG 1316 During our our first year of operation we handled han han- handled considerably I less s than head of ot hogs hogg for the tho entire year We gradually Increased this as the hogs bogs were produced produce When finally our plant WaS wan too small email to handle the amount of of hogs hogs hogs' raised we made additions from time to to time so BO as to keep pace with the hog i industry During Daring this season we h have havo o ma made le further additions addi- addi addi additions to our plant and from now on will be able to handle hogs per annum To get to this point has b been n a very very seve severe severe and hard struggle Our Investment Is s close on onto onto onto to and yet the returns on the investment Investment investment invest invest- Invest invest- ment of This Utah Industry Being familiar with the tactics of or big packers packers in destroying smaller independent plants we found round it necessary in order not to be put out of business to operate our business over a great great many states including the Pacific coast so that should any measures be appi applied ed against us by bythe bythe bythe the big packers It would be necessary for them to ge get at us at a a. great many many points and such sucha such sucha a fight tight might be detrimental to their own interest in- in terest Notwithstanding this meats were shipped by bythe bythe bythe the meat combine into Ogden and Salt SnIt Lake City as well as other places and sold for less money than It cost at shipping point for the specific purpose of oi hampering our development dm and injuring our business It was necessary for foras foras foras as at many times to sell meats for materially less than cost in order to hold our business In entering the Los Angeles and San Francisco Francisco Francisco Fran Fran- cisco markets the meat combine fought us all they possibly could even to the extent of threatening ing to put us out of business and when we did not submit counter proposals of divisions of ot markets were suggested We declined and end other steps were therefore necessary on their part in order to further impede our ress Ho How High Financing Works When You When You Know How Although lt ough the Cudahy company have millions of dollars behind them they apparently did not j have enough nough faith in the future of the packing business of this intermountain country to invest their capital as we have had in building up the hog industry and the packing business from its foundation They sent their representatives to the commercial organizations o of oR
