Show RELIEF PLANS PRESENTED TO CENTRAL GROUP CROUP Chamber Secretary Outlines Functions of Newly Created Committee Plans of the city and county central centra relief relic committee for coordinating work of established relief agencies and preventing duplication of or effort elton and for the control of independent relief re reo re- re lief efforts and solicitations was outlined out lined Thursday to the boards of established agencies at Civic Center by Gus IP P Backman general secretary of oC the chamber of commerce The committee according to Mr l Backman was empowered b by the mayor maor and chairman of the county board of commissioners to supervise e all relief and unemployment measures measures meas meas- ures to be taken in the city and count county during the coming year ear Foremost among the committees committee's immediate efforts Mr Backman said will wil be t the e establishment of or a central centra registration bureau where all cases will be cleared It is intended that the confidential exchange e at the central centra office be established at an accessible point and that an outstanding and experienced ex social worker be placed in m mcharge charge All cases will be cleared many mally through this office and referred to the social agency properly sible for care of at the applicant Mr Backman said A AlA new ne survey Is Ls being made through the committee agency of all registered cases and to obtain additional additional addi registrations of all who will need help These cases will be sub divided into classes in which indi gency or social work or ment is the major problem Following Follow Follow- ing this segre segregation the committee proposes to ta relieve the social agencies of responsibility in m handling the unemployment unemployment un employment cases In addition the committee will endeavor to reimburse the treasuries of the agencies which have been called upon to divert funds to the relief of ot unemployment thereby there there- b by curtailing the amount available for social service and relief of or the indigent By this method it is hoped to relieve the agencies of some 2500 cases they are now called unon UDon tn In I handle n ON ROLLS I Mr Backman told the agencies that persons sons representing at least families arc are at present on the rolls of the unemployment bureau He added that the committee also intends in in- tends to give ive such prompt attention to all cases whether transient or resident resi resi- dent that no criticism of or any social agency on the grounds of lack Inck of or interest in in- terest or coordination will be possible from any source From the figures which have been submitted by social agencies to the central committee said Mr Backman Back Back- man it is evident that several hundred hun hun- dred thousand dollars will have to be repaid to the various agencies to allow them to carry carryon on their relief work during the year ending June 1 1933 The major problem however is the proper handling of ol cases which are not strictly social cases From an analysis made by the agencies it will be necessary to raise a fund for Unemployment unemployment un Un- employment approximating I a month With a view to aiding in financing this large project the committee is giving careful consideration to the bills pending in m congress which may make available to Utah a fairly large sum of money for direct relief and for unemployment Projects of the committee to lish ish a central warehouse in Salt Lake for or food and clothing distribution to reestablish the women's work centers for or reconditioning old clothes for op op- crating a community boarding house or relief station for homeless men and women for promoting the efficient care and regulation of ot transients and using them to work on useful municipal pal jal and county projects were outlined b by Mr Backman |
