J Thomas Thom Thom- as E street Both Bolli were and robbed by the two bandits one of whom was believed an associate of or Bud Nestell 27 27 and James Field 18 18 who have confessed to numerous recent robberies After questioning the victims and investigating nv the two jobs Police Chief William L. L Payne said he was convinced that both were perpetrated in ill an attempt to divert suspicion from Nestel and Field TELLS ELLS OF CONFESSION If his theory is correct Chief Payne PaIle said zaid the attempt of the bandits to save their alleged associates went for naught as Nestell and Field as as- admitted five Live recent holdups in jn Salt Lake and Ogden including that of ot A. M L Ferro 24 24 and his young wom woman n companion early Tuesday morning Ferro and the young woman were held up up on Wasatch boulevard robbed and driven to Lehi where whore Ferros Ferro's companion told police one of the bandits criminally attacked her ner The two prisoners admitted the holdup Chief Payne said but denied molesting the young oung woman Mr Von Elm brother of George Gix Von Elm professional golfer geller had parked his automobile in the garage ga rage of a brother Henry Von Elm at East Broadway when the two robbers approached him with guns drawn FORCED INTO AUTO One bandit forced him Into the machine machine ma ma- chine and the other backed it out of the garage They drove Mr Von Elm to Third West and Seventeenth nth South streets robbed him of his hat watch arid d overcoat and forced him to alight from the machine which they drove away Mr Thomas was waiting for a street streetcar streetcar car at West Temple street and Layton avenue when the two bandits drove up in the Von Elm car menaced him with their pistols and forced him to enter the car Driving to Twenty Twenty- first South and Main streets tho robbers robbers rob rob- bers took Mr Thomas' Thomas overcoat hat arid and gloves and some small change and them made mad him get out of the machine Both victims telephoned police after they were freed and prowl cars combed the city for several hours houri without finding a trace of the robbers robber or the stolen automobile The robbers rob bers ac acted d as if they were intoxicated or under the influence of narcotics police olice were told thid |
