tlc I i stepped into the tho taxi and we wo started fOI for his studio A studio in Montmartre tre re That in Itself itsel conjures s up all I sorts of or r mantic pictures r On stepping out of th the elevator levator those little elevators In France FratT one Frane one e-one one always wonders if it one wip reach ones one's destination or go crashing to t earth arth we knocked as we had b been en must confess that m my first Fe sst t d ln was o one of disappointment P Perhaps I had unconsciously ex expected expected ex- ex exI I the luxurious studio of ot the novel and the stage yards Afterwards I grew to love the bare room with Its walls walls' of an indeterminate color its one or two dilapidated chairs its great preat easel and the mysterious can can- I v vas s backs of ot pct pictures res f faced ced toward the wall There were a few ota oia and I dingy costumes flung on a chair the theone theone theone one spot of color and beauty in tho room being a a. lovely Spanish shawl Nothing o of the romantic or artistic ar ar- ar about this studio but a real When I grew to know it better it seemed so saturated with the personality of oC its owner that I completely forgot Its Us bareness din- din giness There were alwa always s 's two men there thereto I to whom we Were were vere Introduced but to whom I regret to say I paid little attention o My My- eyes and e ears ry were all for for- and it was s only later that I discovered that one of those two men is the greatest modern writer In in in- Spain Our host was In a very dirty shirt for Cor which he apologized his apologized his workIng working work work- ing And the only thing about him him or his clothes that at all fitted in with ones one's Idea of ot of an artist in his studio was the artists artist's cap
